REQUEST: Bulldog Breed - Made In England (1969 UK Psych Rock)

BANDA OBSCURA QUE FAZIA UM PSYCHEDELIC ROCK MUITO BOM!! EM ALGUMAS FAIXAS HÁ UMA CERTA SEMELHANÇA COM PINK FLOYD EM SUA FASE MAIS PSICODÉLICA!! O BATERISTA LOUIS FARRELL PARTICIPOU DA BANDA GUN, E MUITOS MEMBROS DO BULLDOG BREED TOCARAM NA BANDA PLEASE!! O GUITARRISTA KEITH CROSS E O BAIXISTA BERNIE JINKS DEPOIS DO FIM DA BULLDOG BREED VIRIAM A FORMAR A BOA BANDA T2, PORTANTO, TRATA-SE DE INTEGRANTES RENOMADOS E COM "PEDIGREE"!! EXCELENTE VENENO INGLÊS!!

Finally here is the official edition of this classic '60's UK psych/prog album from the DECCA master tapes! Originally released in 1969 on Deram this album sounds really ahead of the progressive game on certain tracks like "Broomstick Ride" whilst "Friday Hill" is a beautiful psychedelic number. This really is a late '60's period piece that deserves more attention. The band included future Gun/Please members and finally evolved into T2 very soon after the recording of the album. A Pre T2 / Gun UK psych masterpiece. Features new sleevenotes photos plus bonus tracks (the rare "Halo In My Hair"/ "Portcullis Gate").

There is no way on earth now that some corporate monolith would give a motley bunch of south London teenage longhairs the keys to the studio and a big wodge of cash, saying “go on lads, do what you like.” Yet that's exactly what Decca did in 1969 to these fortunate 16 to 19 year olds, and were rewarded with possibly the most preposterous debut single ever released on a major label: Bulldog Breed’s ‘Halo In My Hair’ (b/w ‘Portcullis Gate’), included here as bonus tracks on the reissue of the band’s only album, Made in England.

‘Halo’ is a fantastic freak-beat rave-up replete with a ton of fuzz and a truly bizarre cyclic percussion/keyboard refrain that hammers itself into your brain until you run round the room screaming “What in the name of fuck is making that noise?” ‘Portcullis Gate, on the other hand, sounds truly like nothing else, Pounding, repetitive drums and filtered guitars lead into an astoundingly foolish lyric concerning madness, ancient battles and the underbelly of the psychedelic dream, bellowed out by a man with so much speed in his bloodstream that he can barely force his teeth apart to sing. Lovely.

The rest of the album is just as schizophrenic, and seems to come from that same place as earlier groups like The Yardbirds (post-Clapton) and The Misunderstood, the tracks still pop song short, but drenched in phasing and filtering, unhinged fuzztone and bizarre instrumentation. There are none of the 20-minute solos you’d expect from London in 1969 (or from the bands that sprung out of Bulldog Breed, Gun and the utterly prog-tastic T2) – just a bunch of Mods who’d discovered acid but couldn't put away the Purple Hearts and wanted to cram every single idea they had into perfectly formed three-minute epics.

They didn’t always succeed; but when they did the results were quite something, from the two-chord Detroit style ramalama of ‘Reborn’ to the flute-spangled psychedelic wonderment of ‘AustinOsmanSpare’, another track with lyrics so shameless that even David Tibet would be embarrassed to sing them.

You want screaming guitar battling against WWII radio traffic? You got it (‘I Flew’). You want to skip through rainbow-hued, diamond-frosted forest glades with saucer-eyed nymphs, while delicate jazz organ and folk harmonies slip between the boughs? You can do that too (‘Dougal’). You want the sleaziest piece of psych ever, with what sounds suspiciously like the singer having a wank over the top of the instrumental section? Well, it's right here (‘When The Sun Stands Still’). You want stomping, drunken, rocking blues, Neanderthal harmonica and titles like ‘Top Of The Pops Cock’?

REPOST: Bubble Puppy - A Gathering Of Promises (1969 Texas Rock Acid Psych)

EXCELENTE BANDA DE GARAGEM TEXANA DOS ANOS 60, BUBBLE PUPPY LANÇOU ESTE ALBUM E DEPOIS MUDOU O NOME PARA DEMIAN!! OS CARAS FAXIAM UM ROCK PSICODÉLICO COM GUITARRAS ACIDAS DE PRIMEIRA LINHA!! A FAIXA TÍTULO DO ALBUM É BEM AO ESTILO PSYCH PROGRESSIVO E UMA CANÇÃO MUITO BEM TRABALHADA COM GUITARRA ACUSTICA E VOCAIS HARMONIOSOS!! EXCELENTE BANDA E UM VENENO ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO!!

In 1969, Texas acid-psych warlords Bubble Puppy burst into the U.S. Top 20 with “Hot Smoke and Sasafrass,” the slashing, frenzied freakout that kicks off the band’s brain-bending debut, A Gathering of Promises. Signed to Houston’s legendary International Artists imprint, the foursome were label mates of such hallowed acts as the 13th Floor Elevators and the Red Krayola. But A Gathering of Promises, the group’s sole International Artists album, stands out from the rest of the roster with its rich vocal harmonies and heavier, Cream/Hendrix/Who sound.

Descended from Corpus Christi garage kings the Bad Seeds, Bubble Puppy’s tripped out calling card was its combination of soaring, fuzz-drenched guitars, frantic drumming, stop-on-a-dime arrangements and tight, graceful harmonies. Songs like the manic “Lonely,” the cryptically twisting “I’ve Got to Reach You” and the majestic, guitar-searing “Hurry Sundown” prove that Bubble Puppy was far more than just a one hit wonder.

PLUTO - Pluto (1971 UK Hardrock Prog)

BANDA INGLESA DE HARDROCK COM PITADAS PROGRESSIVAS DE ALTÍSSIMA QUALIDADE E COM UM VOCAL PODEROSOS!! BOM DISCO, BOA BANDA, BOM VENENO!! ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO!!
Collectable 1972 UK Hardrock with some nice heavy touches and tight vocal harmonies. Some nice guitar work and a definite late '60's vibe adds to the appeal of this fine UK rock album, reminiscent in places of The Apple. This reissue also contains bonus tracks.

Pluto, although not necessarily one of those bands who spring immediately to mind as having been a seminal influence on the weaving of rock music's tapestry, nevertheless remain an excellent, if little-known and much underrated band, whose only album (originally released on the Dawn label back in November 1971) has, during the latter half of the '90s, become a much sought-after item in the ever-expanding underground/progressive sector of the record collectors' market.
Conceived initially by guitarist Paul Gardner and taking their name from the Disney cartoon character, they were formed in North London in 1970. The key members were Gardner and Alan Warner, two highly experienced campaigners from widely disparate musical backgrounds, their full personnel comprising Paul Gardner (guitar/vocals); Alan Warner (guitar/vocals), Mick Worth (bass); and Derek Jervis (drums).

The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation - Doctor Dunbar's Prescription (1969 UK Blues Psych)

AYNSLEY DUNBAR FAZIA UM BLUES COM PITADAS PSICODÉLICA DE PRIMEIRA LINHA!! GRANDE DISCO E BOA RARIDADE!! ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO A BLUESEIROS E PSICODÉLICOS!!
The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation's second album was much the same as their first, offering competent late-'60s British blues, given a slightly darker cast than was usual for the style via Victor Brox's somber vocals. Like their debut, it was dominated by original material, and as on its predecessor, the compositions were rather routine blues-rock numbers, though they benefited from arrangements by highly skilled players.
The best of these tracks were the ones that utilized Brox's gloomy, almost gothic organ, if only because it made them stand out more among the company of the many similar bands recording in the prime of the British blues boom. Otherwise the main fare was straightforward blues-rock that was well played, but rather average and forgettable, the most distinguished ingredient being Dunbar's hard-hitting, swinging drums.
If only because it has some original songs that were better than anything on the first album ("Fugitive," "Till Your Lovin' Makes Me Blue," and "Tuesday's Blues," the last of which has some songwriting and guitar work quite similar to Peter Green's late-'60s style in those departments), it's a slightly better listen, though not up to the standards of somewhat similar groups like Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers [Allmusic.com]

Track list;
01 Change Your Low Down Ways
02 The Fugitive
03 'Till Your Lovin' Makes Me Blue
04 Now That You've Lost Me
05 I Tried
06 Call My Woman
07 The Devil Drives
08 Low Gear Man
09 Tuesday's Blues
10 Mean Old World

VENENO SUPER RARO E DIFERENTE DE TUDO QUE JÁ SE ESCUTOU!! EXPERIMENTE ESTE VENENO COM EFEITOS TOTALMENTE DIFERENTES E INESPERADOS!!
ALBUM REVIEW
Exuma's debut album was a real odd piece of work, even by the standards of the late '60s and early '70s, when major labels went further out on a limb to throw weird stuff at the public to see what would stick than they ever had before or have since. Roughly speaking, it's kind of like a combination of the Bahamian folk of Joseph Spence with early Dr. John at his most voodooed-out, though even that nutshell doesn't really do justice to how unusual this record is. Often it seems more like eavesdropping on a tribal ritual than listening to songs. Some of the tracks, indeed, have little or less to do with conventional "songs" than with tunes and lyrics; they're more akin to Mardi Gras street percussion jams airlifted to the Caribbean islands. Exuma and his accompanists make quite a spooky clamor with their various bells, foot drums, chanting, gasps, sighs, shouts, and other percussive instruments, creating a mood both celebratory and scary.

He's not totally averse to using more standard song forms, though, singing about "zombies walking in the broad daylight" in "Mama Loi, Papa Loi"; devising a simple, fairly singable soul melody for "You Don't Know What's Going On," his most famous song due to its inclusion in the movie Joe; and setting "The Vision" to an appealing, if again quite simple, folk melody. Exuma's rough, unschooled vocals cut off any prospect of mainstream accessibility, but they get the job done in getting both his uplifting and ominous spirituality over. It's a little surprising that this stuff hasn't undergone a sizable cult revival; many artists of lesser talent and idiosyncrasy have, and perhaps the 2003 CD reissue on Repertoire, with reasonably
informed liner notes, will aid in its rediscovery.

REPOST: Falcons - Fever (1970 France Hard Rock Bluesy)

RARITY ALBUM!! DISCO RARÍSSIMO DE UMA BANDA QUE TINHA MEMBROS DA ESCÓCIA E DA FRANÇA MAS QUE ORIGINALMENTE PODE SER CONSIDERADA UMA BANDA FRANCESA, POIS FOI LÁ QUE NASCEU AINDA NO ANO 1963!! NÃO SE TEM MUITA INFORMAÇÃO DOS CARAS A NÃO SER EM FRANCÊS E ESSA EM INGLÊS ABAIXO!! SEI DIZER QUE ERA UMA EXCELENTE BANDA QUE FAZIA PODEROSOS COVERS NUMA MISTURA DE HARD ROCK E PITADAS BLUES!! A PRIMEIRA FAIXA "FEVER" É UMA OBRA COM UM ORGAN HAMMOND TRABALHANDO DE FUNDO MUITO LOUCO!! VERSÃO PARA "ON BROADWAY" A MELHOR QUE JÁ OUVI!! A VERSÃO DE "DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD" CERTAMENTE ESTÁ ENTRE AS MELHORES, POIS ELES TRANSFORMARAM ESTA MÚSICA POP NUM PSYCH BLUESY QUE FICOU DUCARALHO!! O VOCALISTA TINHA UMA VOZ ROUCA E PODEROSA E DAVA UM TOQUE ESPECIAL NAS CANÇÕES!! VALE A PENA CONFERIR MAIS ESTA RARIDADE QUE O BLOG OFERECE!! VENENO BOM E RECOMENDADO!!

Largely a top twenty covers band, originally modelled on The Shadows, The Falcons were formed in the Summer of 1960 and played at The Burnside Club Rosyth in their early days (transporting their gear in a pram!). Trevor Forster (a Rosyth Dockyard electrician) originally joined on tenor saxophone in 1961 (though he was a clarinet player who didn't then play sax!) then took over vocals from Dusty Love when he left to join the merchant Navy. The (semi-professional) Falcons rode the beat-group wave to local fame at The Kinema Ballroom in Dunfermline (where they also rehearsed), playing there some 255 times. They also played at US Air-Force bases on a French tour. At one time they were able to play for four hours without repeating material.

They made their BBC radio debut on 12th March 1964 and appeared on Scottish Television a week later. Trevor left the band in 1964 for a position with The Red Hawks for a year before leading his own Edinburgh-based eight-piece band and rejoining The Falcons in 1967. The band split in 1968 sometime after their last ballroom appearance on Sunday 18th of August, re-emerging as 'The JB Memorial' until late 1971. Trevor then played as a duo with Dougie Wright which evolved into the band 'Scope' for ten years.

Following the 'Sixties Experience' gig to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the building of the ballroom extension in 1964, Trevor was inspired to reform the band. He got some friends together in late 2004 / early 2005 and were unleashed to the public after some six months of rehearsals in late July 2005, with Falcons old & new, playing local venues with a repertoire including covers from the 60s, 70s & 80s by The Move, The Small Faces (or 'Wee Coupons' as Davie likes top call them), Pink Floyd, The Eagles ('their cousins'), The Hollies and many others. Original bassist Peter 'Bud' Heaps now plays with rock n roll outfit 'Des & The Dingoes'.

They've recorded a couple of live albums which are now available. I've seen them at The Carnegie Hall Dunfermline with 'Lights Out By Nine' & 'The Stevie Agnew Band' on 29th September 2006 and at PJ Molloys in Dunfermline on Friday 29th December 2006 and they were absolutely top drawer. Do yourself a favour and see them soon.

Sadly, Pete Hunter (originally from Lumphinnans) died in the Victoria Hospice Kirkcaldy on December 18th 2007. He had moved house from Norwich to rejoin the band in 2006. Early in 2008, drumming duties were taken up by relative youngster Wayne Robertson and the story rocks & rolls on ...

Original line-up

Dusty Love - vocals
Vic Chappell - rhythm guitar
Jimmy Bryce - lead guitar
Peter 'Bud' Heaps - bass
Eric Murray - drums

Others have included:

Charlie York - drums
Roy Williams - drums (also manager)

Creation Of Sunlight - Creation Of Sunlight (1968 USA Psycho)

BANDA MUITO LEGAL DA CALIFORNIA QUE FAZIA UM SOM AO ESTILO DAS GRANDES BANDAS PSICODÉLICAS CALIFORNIANAS DOS ANOS 60 COM UM ORGAN CORRENDO SOLTO E UMA GUITARRA FUZZY TRADICIONAL!! EXCELENTE ALBUM E RECOMENDADO AOS AMANTES DO ESTILO!! VENENO DO BOM E ALTAMENTE FLOWER POWER!!
What a unique band was Sunlight (a.k.a. Creation of Sunlight) in their day! There really was nothing else in 1968 that could match their particular combination of psychedelic elements (with the occasional progressive tendency),intelligent, lyrical songs, great vocals, and a sunshine pop sensibility (which all too aptly suits their name, does it not?), taken all together, you have a masterpiece that sold millions, right? Well, not exactly. Few would disagree that this is a great album. So, what happened?

Nearly all of the members of the band – Sunlight, not Creation of Sunlight, as most people have come to know the album – were from the environs of Long Beach, California. Gary Young was the exception to this rule, as he came to California from Oklahoma in the early 1960's with his band the Torques. He and his bandmates asked Jerry Griffin to join the Torques as organ player in 1964/65. It didn't take long for Griffin, as the main song-writer, to become the unofficial leader of the band. Over the course of the following year, several of Griffin's friends from high school joined the Torques; by 1966 the group had changed their name to Sunlights Seven.

The newly dubbed Sunlights Seven recorded a single, although just when it was recorded is unclear. The single contains future Creation of Sunlight staple 'David; backed with a psych version of John Fred & his Playboy Band's hit song 'Judy In Disguise', and was released on Entra Records, with a Long Beach address, as catalogue number EN1082/1083.

There is evidence that Sunlights Seven recorded at least one side of an LP entitled Sunstroke in 1968. This recording never got beyond the acetate stage and is apparently in the hands of a private collector. A photo of the acetate, taken from the book 1001 Record Collector Dreams, shows that at least five songs were recorded, two of which were not included on the Creation of Sunlight LP the band recorded the same year for Windi Records. These songs are Sevens Theme and Judy In Disguise. The other three songs, David, Light Without Heat and In The Middle Of Happy, were included on the Windi LP, but whether or not they were from the same session, or were re-recorded versions, no one from the band recalls.

Around the time of these recording sessions, Gary Young met Bob Engemann of the Lettermen, who had just launched his Windi label. Engemann's brother was a big producer with Capitol Records, which is evidently what encouraged this strange venture into the seamy independent music business. The label was based out of Utah (an even stranger decision), hence the connection with the other rarity on the Windi label, Merkin's "Merkin Manor" LP.

After the Sunstroke project was scrapped, if it was scrapped (?), the band recorded a single for Windi Records under the name of Sunlight. This single contains the songs Colors Of Love and Sometimes A Woman, and was released as Windi catalogue number W-1001/1002. The versions of these songs are reputed to be different from the ones that appear on the LP. It is possible that these versions first appeared on the flip side of the Sunstroke acetate – if in fact there was a flip-side!

The release of the Colors Of Love single led to the excellent decision by Windi to record an entire Sunlight album. This was done with amazing rapidity, and released in 1968 (Windi WS-1001) in an edition of a mere 500 copies. Poor promotion from the hopeless Windi label staff greatly limited sales – although, the fact remains, with only 500 copies to sell, how great an impact could the album ever have been expected to make?! The album contains ten songs, eight of which are original compositions, with Gary Young and Jerry Griffin doing most of the songwriting duties.

Windi released a second single from the LP, catalogue number Windi W-1005/1006, which contains David and The Fun Machine; this made as much impact, if not less, than the album had done. The band played concerts at a number of famous venues, trying to stir up interest in their album; they finished second in a massive "battle of the bands" at the Hollywood Bowl, and spent many a night at the Whiskey A Go-Go with other notable bands of the day. There was talk of a second album, but nothing came of it, making Creation of Sunlight the band's most significant (and only available) musical legacy.

And what of the Creation of Sunlight album? It is a pop psychedelic masterpiece like no other – very cool from start to finish, oozing a sunshine and acid vibe, with multi-layered harmonies, juicy Hammond organ, and lean and mean fuzz guitar. The overall sound is a bit like Strawberry Alarm Clock, I suppose, only with bigger arrangements which include some brass. Sunlight were one of the few bands to successfully merge US pop with late 1960's psychedelia, making fine use of virtually every instrument available at the time. The vocals are superb, and the playing is of consistently high quality throughout.

Now, of course, original copies of the Creation of Sunlight album are virtually never seen; when they do manifest themselves, they fetch more than $1,000 in collector's circles. This is one of the (too) few rarities that can musically justify their price tag. We are very pleased to offer the first official CD version of this great album. Our thanks to all the members of Sunlight for their help in making this reissue possible.

REPOST: Virus - Revelation (1971 German Rock Prog)

VENENO DESTA BOA BANDA ALEMÃ QUE FAZIA UM SOM AO ESTILO ROCK PROGRESSIVO BEM LEGAL E VIAJANTE COM O USO EXTENSIVO DE TECLADOS E FLAUTAS!! NA VERDADE É UM HARD BEM AO ESTILO ALEMÃO MAS COM FORTES INFLUÊNCIAS ERUDITAS E PSICODÉLICAS!! ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO!!!

With "Revelation", the young heavy psychedelic rock group Virus produced one of best early progressive albums in Germany; indeed, it was a revelation! Their style was strongly influenced by Pink Floyd (David Gilmour) and Deep Purple (Jon Lord). The album had five long tracks. The title track included an instrumental classical adaptation of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black". Their instrumental work was even better on the 12 minute "Endless Game". The varied album also had a more hard-rocking track named "Burning Candle". Finally, "Nur Noch Zwei Lichtiahre" guided the listener into deep space, much like a mellow and matured "Interstellar Overdrive". The album was recorded in Star Studios, Hamburg and produced by none other than Konrad Plank.
For "Thoughts" (1971), both Virus' sound and the band itself had changed considerably. Only Krahe and Rieke were left from the original group. Bernd Hohmann had left for Weed. The new members were: Axel Nieling (drums), Jurgen Schafer (bass, vocals), Bernd Rosner (guitar) and Werner Vogt (bass, guitar, vocals). Gone were the psychedelic space-rock and long instrumental workouts. Virus now played a more mainstream, rough and heavy blues-rock, not at all bad, but clearly inferior to their debut. They also contributed to the great Pilz album, "Heavy Christmas" (1971), before vanishing from the scene.

01 - Revelation

Freedom - Is More Than A Word (1972 UK Har Rock Progressive)

MAIS UM ALBUM E O ULTIMO DA CARREIRA DESTA EXCELENTE BANDA INGLESA COMANDADA POR "BOBBY HARRISON" EX-BATERISTA DO PROCOL HARUM EM SUA PRIMEIRA FORMAÇÃO!! COMO SEMPRE O DISCO MANTÉM TODA A QUALIDADE DA BANDA!!

A spinoff of Procol Harum, Freedom was formed by guitarist Ray Royer and drummer Bobby Harrison. Both of them were in Procol Harum's lineup at the outset for their debut, "A Whiter Shade of Pale," single, but were ousted almost immediately when Procol singer, Gary Brooker, enlisted his former bandmates from the Paramounts, Robin Trower and Barry Wilson, as replacements. Freedom's early sound, perhaps unsurprisingly, echoed Procol Harum's in its prominent use of organ and piano, as well as heavy rock guitar, and like Procol Harum's early records, captured late British psychedelia as it was starting to inch towards progressive rock.

Freedom wasn't a Procol Harum clone, though, with a somewhat poppier take on psychedelia that was closer to Traffic than Procol Harum. Their initial lineup only released two singles in 1968 before breaking up, also recording a soundtrack for an obscure Italian film by Dino De Laurentis, Attraction/Black on White. The soundtrack LP was given a limited release in Italy — so limited, in fact, that the group members themselves were unaware that it came out. Recorded with noted future producers Eddie Kramer and Glyn Johns engineering, this was reissued on CD in 1999, and is actually a pretty good if derivative slice of late-'60s British psychedelia.

In 1968, Harrison decided to reorganize the band completely — in fact, so totally that he was the only remaining original member. More albums came out in the late '60s and early '70s, which in keeping with overall British rock trends of the period were in a much heavier, hard, bluesier style. These were middle-of-the-pack, or a little lower than the middle-of-the-pack, efforts with nothing to make them stand out from the crowd in a clogged field. They did get to tour the U.S. as support for Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, and broke up in 1972 after some personnel changes. Harrison became the lead singer in the little-known Snafu, while guitarist Roger Saunders, from the later incarnation of the band, did some session work, joined Medicine Head and played in Gary Glitter's group during the '80s.

Freedom's third album, originally issued in 1970 and reissued on CD in 2000 by Angel Air, is dire period British hard rock in the power trio format. While there's occasional laid-back reflective songwriting amongst the largely original material, its lumpy rhythms and unexceptional melodies make it hard to say much of anything about it, really, except to note that it's easy to envision them as a support act on any number of shows and tours of the era. The numbers emphasizing vocal harmonies are at least inoffensive (if boring), which can't be said of their outings into boogie blues-rock and proto-metal (as on the title track) that really grate. It might have been a cool idea in 1970 to cover the Standells' "Dirty Water," which wasn't a hit in Britain and wasn't yet fashionable as a garage band standard. It is not cool, however, to retitle the song "Frustrated Woman" and take the songwriting credits, as the members do even on the sleeve of the 2000 CD release.

IOTA - Iota - (1969 Texas US Rock Psych Acid Rock)

HIGH RARITY!! RARIDADE INCONTESTÁVEL E UMA BANDA EXCELENTE VINDA DO TEXAS!! OS CARAS FAZIAM UM SOM QUE MISTURAVA PSICODELIA E ACID ROCK COM PITADAS BLUESY DE PRIMEIRA LINHA, BEM TRABALHADO E COM MÚSICOS COMPETENTES!! ALTISSIMAMENTE RECOMENDADO!! UM DE MEUS DISCOS PREFERIDOS, PRINCIPALMENTE A FAIXA Nº 5, E CERTAMENTE UM DOS MELHORES DO GÊNERO!!
Iota was a Northeast El Paso band. On the west side of Mt. Franklin there was hardly anyone that knew this surprising band. So I ran across them by chance. I had been recording Wailing Wall; Iron Butterfly (later to be called Lode Star) and frankly I didn’t give much thought to this loose band from the Northeast. They had a good singer who played bass and a commercial type guitar player. Iota was different in that they had an organ player. I listened to them and decided to record them in spite of the fact that I was interested in the careers of these other bands. Bill Taylor Sparks was getting ready to move to Memphis, TN and our studio was somewhat of a question for the two of us.

I took a liking to this rough hippie-type band and recorded a lot of songs at the upper valley studio. I subsequently moved to Memphis to work at Royal Studios and brought Iota along. For a while they lived in their yellow school bus behind Phyllis Wickhams’ house. She was a writer for Record World Magazine and always seemed to care for the underdog groups . That old school bus had “IOTA” painted on the side and it always was breaking down. I guess they got it from a school that had run it to death and put it out to pasture to die a peaceful death. We found them a funky apartment in a rough neighborhood and started recording them at Royal Studios in the old eight-track room starting at mid-night working until early morning. They stuck it out for a long time , we released the two singles and got them a booking agent that didn’t find them a lot of gigs so two of them worked as garbage collectors bringing home 100 rolls of discarded Xmas paper, times were tight for money but they never complained. They were a different sounding band for the Memphis area and it was hard to find good paying gigs for them. They had a real good live presence and had a killer light show.

Nick Pesce, Hi Records pres. loved one of their songs” Within These Precincts” and that helped to get their records out there but as it turned out the local top forty stations felt that Iota was too heavy for their stations. What a shock, I felt that Iota was the most commercial band we had dealt with for a long time. Both Bill Taylor Sparks and myself produced these guys. Their first single was “Love Come Wicked” and “Within These Precincts” (Hi 45-2200) 1971 . The second record we felt needed to be on a different label because Hi had a reputation of being an R and B label so we put their second record on M.O.C. (MOC-678)1972. The titles: “R.I.P. and Sing For You”.

Carl Neer was the songwriter, bass player and lead singer for this Doors- type- band and seemed to be the major force behind the band. He wrote dark protest tunes and was a serious man with dark long hair and even though he had a commercial voice his lyrics were a little much for the conservative commercial radio. I remember bringing a Program Director (WHBQ) to the studio to hear the latest cuts on Iota and he said how much he personally liked them but they were too much for his station. How strange to have a fan that could do something for the band and just had no backbone to help them out.

Mark Evans played guitar for Iota and was a pleasure to work with. He was always open to the needs of the song. I think you will notice some excellent guitar work in these tracks. He wasn’t the fastest or shredder-type that you expect from a recording band but he was one of the most musically thoughtful players I have ever recorded.

Rick Ramaka played drums for Iota and was the morale leader of the group. He was a real nice guy who played drums okay, one of those members you keep because they hold things together when the times get rough.

Steve Phipps played organ and added a different sound to the band. Typically, El Paso groups consisted of two guitars bass and drums. El Paso was after all was a Texas town so the addition of an organ gave Iota an out of town sound .

There is a wide variety of songs recorded in Texas and Memphis; I hope you enjoy this unique band. Four songs were released on Hi records and some were in the can and some were recorded in El Paso, so this will be the first time to hear some unreleased stuff.

Carl Neer (vocals, bass);
Mark Evans (guitar);
Steve Phipps (organ);
Rich Ramaka (drums).

Rex Holman - Here in the Land of Victory (1970 USA Folk Psychedelia)

EXCELENTE E RARO DISCO FOLK PSYCH ROCK AO ESTILO DE TIM BUCKLEY!! REX HOLMAN TINHA UM VOCAL TRANQUILO QUE SOAVA COMO UM SOPRO DO VENTO EM UMA COLINA!! UM SOM ACUSTICO COM SÍTARA, TABLAS E OUTROS INSTRUMENTOS EXÓTICOS!! MÚSICA DE EXCELENTE QUALIDADE E VENENO DE AÇÃO RELAXANTE!! UM INCENSO, UM BOM VINHO...VIAGEM...

Reissue on CD of ultra-rare U.S. psych/folk album originally from 1970 in the style of Tim Buckley. Probably from California. Here In The Land Of Victory is a very good folk psych album, similar to the better tracks on the Brent Titcomb LP, and sounding a lot like Tim Buckley in parts. Holman has a mid-range quavery voice, and the songs are all very fragile, floating acoustic type of songs, with sitar, tablas and other exotic instrumentation scattered liberally throughout.

The production credits "Schmitt-Douglas", and the album was recorded at Dimension Sounds, which may have been an L.A. Studio. The album cover is a very psychedelic montage featuring Holman super-imposed over scenes of down and out street people. Not as overwhelmingly gorgeous as the JK & Co cover, but similar. Holman also wrote Bizarrek Kind covered by Vision Of Sunshine.

High Treason - High Treason (1969 US Psych Bluesy Rock)

ÓTIMA BANDA AMERICANA QUE FAZIA UM SOM QUE DARIA PRA DEFINIR COMO BLUESY JAZZ PSICODÉLICO!! COMO DICA COMECE ESCUTANDO A FAIXA 3 QUE É UMA VERSÃO MUITO BEM FEITA DA CANÇÃO DE BOB DYLAN "SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK BLUES" E CONFIRA QUE OBRA OS CARAS FIZERAM E TAMBÉM O ÓTIMO VOCAL DA FEMEA VOCALISTA "MARCI RAUER"!! QUE PODER!! A BANDA TINHA UM ESTILO MEIO PARECIDO COM "JEFFERSON AIRPLANE" E "IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY"!!

Somewhat bizarre concept of a loungy nightclub jazz band tackling the mid-era Airplane sound and coming off a lot different than they had intended, I would think. Lady vocalist makes up for her lack of Grace by yelling at the top of her lungs, while cocktail organist and supperclub guitarist "jam" on long tracks, including an unsuccessful Dylan cover. Didn't like this much though others may find some appealing angles on it. Several of the musicians also played with Perry Leopold. [PL]

"Yes, that's not a replication of the American Flag on the top left of this picture....it's a packet containing actual American Flag rolling papers, compliments of High Treason!! This 1970 self-titled LP was recorded in Philadelphia and actually featured several musicians that played with Perry Leopold. Featuring the beautiful and haunting female vocals of Marci Rauer, this music is spacey, bluesy, and psychedelic sounding, much like that of Jefferson Airplane and It's A Beautiful Day!" Time - Before There Was (USA 1968 Psycho)

BOM PSICODELISMO!!! FUZZ GUITARS, FLAUTAS, PERCUSSÃO, ORGAN, HARMONIA, VIAGENS E EFEITOS!!! TUDO QUE UM BOM SOM PSYCH PRECISA!!! É ISSO!!!

This previously unreleased psych album was recorded in 1968 in Toronto Canada and is a revelation from start to finish. Classic 1968 psych with eastern themes, rock and folk all whirled up in a psych mincer to give it that special late '60's US/Canadian psych flavour. The founder of the band studied in the same class as Jim Cuomo from The Spoils Of War. The album is packed with harpsichord, flutes, percussion, heavy fuzz guitar and weird effects, wrapping neatly around lysergic vocals. The band moved to New York a year later and evolved into Think Dog.

Panama Limited - Indian Summer (1970 UK Prog Folk Psych Bluesy)

GRANDÍSSIMO, RARO E VENENO SEM CONTRA-INDICAÇÃO!! ESTE DISCO TEM UM CARÁTER TODO PRÓPRIO E PARTICULAR QUE MUITOS DEFINEM COMO PROGRESSIVO!! EU NÃO DEFINIRIA ASSIM, DIRIA QUE SE APROXIMA DE UM ESTILO MAIS PARA UM PROGRESSIVO BLUES EXPERIMENTAL, PSICODÉLICO E COM PITADAS FOLK!! A BELA VOCALISTA "ANNE MATHEWS" DAVA UM TOQUE TODO ESPECIAL COM SEU VOCAL HARMONIOSO E TOCANDO CRAVO E PERCUSSÃO!! UM DISCO IMPERDÍVEL E ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO!!!

After the release of Panama Limiteds Jug Band eponymous lp Liz Hanns left the band and the music changed somewhat from the traditional raggedy jug blues along with a shortening of the band name. The first lp isnt that bad, its just tradtional blues. Liz Hanns vocals are kind of enjoyable though adding something quirky but the lps strongest point is its ultraviolet blue green photo negative on a traintrack psych sleeve with Granada TV 69 typeface.
'Indian Summer' has a character all of its own,it has more of a prog experimental blues side which lazily could be compared to Beefheart with Dennis Parkers vocals, but Dens influences must of run a bit deeper than that into blues purist-dom.The beautiful Anne Matthews was the new recruit playing vocals, harpsichord and percussion and adds some top baroque prog with doomy harpsichord on 'Darkness Brings'.

From the first track we get some great vocalmontagezip at the start of 'Moonshine' before descending in some lazy drunk blues. 'give me moonshine, just let me die'.

This is one of a few lps where I can enjoy the banjo (apart from The Monks) as its provides colour and goes a bit raga in parts when the band jam out the codaaaaaaa. Subtle use of fuzz and wah- bass join the quirky blues.

'Dangle Wild' with its plod bass and Cale type violin drone is another stand out with the blues banshee wail from Anne Matthews, superb stuff.

The only let down is the last track with its playful pub blues comedy nonsense but this can be forgiven as each the other nine tracks are fucken great ORGANIC psych prog.

Trying to get this lp (on vinyl) is a pain though as its only been reissued once in the early 90s and the originals are very rare.Hopefully it will be released again?OOO KNOWS.

Krokodil - An Invisible World Revealed (1971 Swiss Prog Rock Psych)

SEGUINDO A SEQUENCIA DE POSTS DESTA EXCELENTE BANDA SUÍÇA!! TODOS SÃO ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADOS!! E VEM MAIS POR AÍ!!

Krokodil's third album is reputedly their only progressive effort, and probably the only one worth hearing. You can tell that they're coming from a folk background, to which they've added some wigged-out psych and what sounds like a Mark II Mellotron which figures, given the date. Some of the material slightly outstays its welcome, if I'm going to be honest, but the overall vibe is pretty good, with the folk stuff colliding head-on with some dark, distorted guitar work straight out of the Edgar Broughton Band songbook. Probably.

As for Terry Stevens' 'Tron, Lady Of Attraction has a few brass chords, with some superb pitchbend work, far smoother than even the best set-up M400, plus a quick burst of strings, while Green Fly has some nice upfront strings. The druggy Odyssey In Om is the album's 'Tron highlight, though, with a rich, almost unaccompanied Mellotron strings part with some stoned-out narration over it, in the obligatory German accent. More of the same later in the song, this time underpinned by flutes, with a strings melody tagged on, making for a very worthwhile 'Tron effort.

I get the impression that the version of the album I've reviewed is a mid-'90s German bootleg, and it's since received a proper release. This version has three bonus tracks, two of which (Sessions 1 and 2) are tedious studio jams; there seem to be two further extras on the official release, but I've no idea whether or not they're any better than these. Either way, cautiously recommended on the 'Tron front.

REPOST: Kahvas Jute - Wide Open (1971 Australian Prog Rock Psych Jazz)

REPOST: Orphan Egg - Orphan Egg (1968 US Psych Garage)

BANDA MUITO BOA E DE UMA SONORIDADE EXCELENTE!! TIPICO DAS BOAS BANDAS DOS ANOS 60 QUE FAZIAM UM ROCK PSYCH GARAGEIRO MUUITO BOM!! RYTHM BLUES, PSICODELISMO NUMA SONZEIRA MUITO BOA!! OS CARAS FAZIAM ALGO DIFERENTE, MISTURAVAM TUDO, BLUES, GARAGE, PSICODELISMO, ROCK SESSENTISTA E TUDO DE BOM, BOA BANDA , BOA MUSICA E BOM VENENO!!

"Orphan Egg's only release, this self-titled album which appeared on the Carole Record label in 1968. The band, formed in 1967 in San Jose, was one of the lengthy list of Bay area groups inspired by the psych movement spreading its tentacles from the sound's spiritual home in San Francisco. The album, which also boasts some strong UK beat/psych influences a la early Status Quo, features lashings of incredible heavy fuzz guitar psych on a number of tracks, several of which were deemed worthy enough to feature in director Maury Dexter's exploitation flick, Born Wild, and which also included a memorable scene of the band strutting their musical stuff at a pool party. The album consists of several covers including a killer version of the old Everly Brothers' hit, 'Bird Dog.' Apart from this, the self-penned tunes really are the stand-outs here, with the feisty fuzz guitar, bass, drums, a little recorder and a smattering of harpsichord, combining, along the beautiful trippy vocals, to produce an ethereal, floating psych sound that makes for a hugely enjoyable listen."

Typical '68 lyte-psych with an eclectic (or rag-tag) assortment of "hip" sounds; at best an edgy melodic fuzz-psych presence a la Food, at worst a wimpy early Brit Invasion vibe. Strong UK beat-psych influences throughout (think early Status Quo), with some side-glances at the commercial psych sound out of LA. Obvious signs of talent, given another 6 months or so they probably could have made a really good LP. Neat, zit-faced freshman vocals and 3-4 tracks that hit the vintage teen-psych moves right on means the LP needs to be heard, while some poorly chosen covers and an unsuccessful "heavy blues" excursion seals its ultimate fate in a manner similar to the Rainy Daze LP. This seems to have been the last album released by this shortlived GNP Crescendo subsidiary. Also released in Germany by Vogue. The band appears on the "Cycle Savages" movie soundtrack (AIP, 1970). Swampgas - Swampgas (1972 USA Heavy Southern Rock)

BANDA AMERICANA OBSCURA QUE FAZIA UM ROCK HARD ROCK PSICODÉLICO COM GUITARRAS E ORGAN FLUINDO EM PERFEITA HARMONIA E QUE LEMBRA EM ALGUNS MOMENTOS A BANDA "LYNYRD SKYNYRD"!! UM ALBUM RARO, DE GRANDES SONS COMO "FROLIC CHILD", UMA BALADA COM UMA MARAVILHOSA GUITARRA TRABALHANDO, E "TRAPPED IN THE CITY" COM 6 MINUTOS DE UM BLUESY CARACTERIZADO POR UM EXCELENTE TRABALHO DO ORGAN HAMMOND!! MUITO BOA BANDA E MUITO BOM ALBUM!! VENENO LEGAL E COM BOM EFEITO!!

A superb and little known album, produced by the group members and Artie Kornfeld (Wind In The Willows, Artie Kornfeld Tree...) and engineered by Shelly Yakus at A&R Studios, NYC. A psychic chiropractor, Charlie Tuna, is also credited on the album! Consisting of eight long tracks, all but one are composed by Baird Hersey. A mixture of some fast numbers (Patato Strut, Don't), some melancholic ballads, two complex tracks (Eulogy, Trapped In The City) and a raga with sitar (Egg Shell). Baird Hersey was obviously influenced by Hendrix, but goes further than his influences and the guitars (electric and acoustic) are especially interesting. Kim Ornitz's voice sounds a bit like Henry Tree's vocalist. Baird Hersey released at least two solo albums: Lookin' For That Groove in 1978, consisting of jazz rock (Novus/Arista) and ODO OP8 FX in 1980 (Bent), which was very experimental, with tape loops. Artie Kornfeld had previously played with The Changin' Times.

SWAMPGAS ?Swampgas? CD. First discovered while opening for the Grateful Dead, Long Island quartet Swampgas were taken under the wing of producer Artie Kornfeld (Wind In The Willows, Woodstock co-conspirator) and set about recording an LP. Due to financial difficulties the album was held up a year, and finally given a cursory release in 1972 (Buddah BDS 5102), by which time the disillusioned band has already broken up. Listening to their sole artifact now, one immediately notices the loose, rural southern-esque vibe considering their northern roots, and the inventive guitarwork of main songwriter Baird Hersey, who continues to make music today as leader of the overtone singing ensemble Prana.

This unjustifiably obscure 1971 outing by a rock quartet led by composer and Hendrix-influenced fretman Baird Hersey features eight long Grateful Dead-like, highlighted by the heavily composed numbers "Eulogy" and "Trapped In The City."

The ... Full Descriptionalbum, which first saw the light of day in 1971, was originally released on the Buddah label (BDS 5102). The production credit goes to Artie Kornfeld (he of Wind In The Willows and The Artie Kornfeld Tree), with engineering by Shelly Yakus. Radio Active. 2005.

REPOST: Tasavallan Presidentti - Milky Way Moses (1974 Finland Rock Prog Psych)

MAIS UM ALBUM DESTA EXCELENTE BANDA FINLANDESA QUE FAZIA UMA FUSION DE PROGRESSIVO, PSICODELISMO E FORTES PITADAS JAZZ!! VENENO ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO!!
The last studio album by this fabulous band offers a bit more psychedelic and jazzier stuff when compared to their previous albums. The peaceful pastoral elements of their most favored album "Lambertland" have dissolved, and I can understand why even some fans of this band don't appreciate this stuff. There has been a two year's gap between their previous studio album, and the bassist player has been changed. Heikki Virtanen (Tolonen's cousin I recall?) has replaced Måns, and Tolonen and Pöyry also do some keyboard playing. The opening title track "Milky Way Moses" has catchy grooves and good melodic passages, representing the most accessible side of this record. The following track runs over 10 minutes, "Caught from The Air" has hypnotic, pulsing tones, and some wah-wah treaded bass lines create a powerful, psychedelic feeling. If one is interested of this stuff, I would recommend to hunt down 4 CD box "Anna Mulle Lovee", which has some archive material of different Finnish bands. There's a cool live version of this song titled "Ota Lennosta Kii!", with different Finnish lyrics. In addition of two shorter OK tracks I would mention "Confusing the Issue", which resembles the title track, lots of acoustic rhythm guitars, saxes and bold singing by Eero. His voice isn't as pleasant as FRANK ROBSON’s, but he's a good singer though. "How to start a Day" is another longer, experimental song.

1. Milky Way Moses (8:08)
2. Caught from the Air (11:45)
3. Jelly (3:36)
4. Confusing the Issue (5:42)
5. How to start a Day (13:49)
6. Piece of Mind (3:30)

Total Time: 47:17

Sweet Marie - One (1970 USA Rock)

HIGH RARITY!! RARIDADE MÁXIMA!! POWER TRIO HAVAIANO QUE TINHA UMA SONORIDADE QUE LEMBRA UM POUCO JIMI HENDRIX!! A BANDA FICOU POPULAR NO HAVAI COM O HIT "REMEMBER MARY"!! ESTE ALBUM FOI GRAVADO EM HONOLULU E NELE HÁ DIFERENTES ESTILOS, DESDE O ROCK MAIS PESADO AO ESTILO HENDRIX, ROCK MAIS CONVENCIONAL, BLUES E PITADAS PSICODÉLICAS!! EXCELENTE E RARÍSSIMO VENENO HAVAIANO!!

By the mid-'60s singer/guitarist Sonny Lathrop had made a minor name for himself as a member of Mickey and The Invaders and The Starfires (see separate entries). Along with a wave of other California-based acts (Merrell Fankhauser, Jimi Hendrix, Quicksilver Messenger Service, etc.), the late-'60s found Lathrop living and working in Hawaii. Teaming up with drummer Willy Bims and singer/bassist Prince Teddy, as Sweet Marie the trio began to attract local attention, eventually being signed by the small California-based Yard Bird label.

The band made their recording debut with the 1970 single "Remember Mary" b/w "Don't You Understand?" (Yard Bird catalog number YDB-70-1314), and seemed poised on the edge of success when Liberty Records acquired national distribution rights, reissuing the 45 (Liberty catalog number 56215). Unfortunately, the single vanished without a trace. In the meantime, Yard Bird financed an album. Recorded in Honolulu, Hawaii 1970's self-produced "Sweet Marie 1" offered up a great slice of guitar-propelled rock. Interestingly, splitting vocal chores, Lathrop and Teddy provided the band with the ability to handle distinctively different styles. With Teddy at the helm material such as "Remember Mary" and "If You Love Me" found the band working in a Hendrix-styled heavy rock arena. While a less distinctive singer, Lathrop injected material such as "Standin' By the River" and "Don't You Understand" with a more conventional rock orientation. Regardless of who was handling vocals, the material was peppered with some first rate guitar (check out the jazzy "Goin' Down the Road"). Now the bad news. While they may have been one of the best bands in Hawaii, little on the album was particularly original or innovative. It's a good, if somewhat pedestrian rock set that you're liable to like if you enjoy Hendrix. As for dealers that are advertising it as being psych, or progressive ... nope! Signed to a small label such as Yard Bird guaranteed limited sales, though the band apparently made enough money to buy a nightclub on the island of Oahu.

The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Vol. 2 (1967 US Psychedelic Pop Folk)

Prazer garantido! Um abraço, OldrockerBR.

Originally released in 1967, this was the 'zany psychedelic' band's first out of five albums. This 'Part One' by WCPAEB is better than what I had expected. Tracks that make this CD reissue a true keeper are "I Won't Hurt You", their Frank Zappa cover "Help,I'm A Rock", the REALLY strange "Leiyla", the innocent-sounding "Here's Where You Belong", "Scuse Me,Miss Rose" and the instrumental "High Coin". What a great trip! Line-up: Kenny Bobo-vocals, Michael Lloyd-guitar, Shawn Harris-bass&vocals, Dan Harris and Ron Morgan-guitars and Hal Blaine-drums. Should appeal to fans of Moby Grape, Skip Spence, early Zappa, Bow Street Runners and maybe H.P.Lovecraft. Recommended.
