Mandrake Memorial - Puzzle (1969 US Psychedelic Rock)

TERCEIRO, ULTIMO E MORTAL ALBUM DESTA EXCELENTE BANDA AMERICANA ONDE O SOM CONTINUA MORTAL E O ORGAN SEGUE PASSEANDO MAGISTRALMENTE NA COZINHA!! OS OUTROS DOIS JÁ FORAM POSTADOS ANTERIORMENTE!! UM VERDADEIRO TRIUNVIRATO DE OURO DE PRESENTE AOS ENVENENADOS!! NÃO CONSUMAM COM MODERAÇÃO!! AQUI OS VENENOS NÃO TEM CONTRA-INDICAÇÕES!!

The third and final offering from this Philadelphia act arrived in 1969 after a false start in its recording. Earlier acoustic sessions were ditched in favour of orchestrally backed mood-pieces and ballads. The gentle vocals of Randy Monaco, washes of warping synths and drifting guitar textures provide a floating and dreamy feel to this album. The standout tracks being "Earthfriend" and the recurring "Just A Blur". To experience a serene psychedelic soundscape that defies comparison I don't think you can do better than "Puzzle". As an added bonus the album is dressed in a stunning Escher cover

01 Earthfriend Prelude
02 Earthfriend
03 Just A Blur (Version 1)
04 Hiding
05 Just A Blur (Version 2)

Mandrake Memorial – Medium (1969 US Psychedelic Rock)

SEGUE O SEGUNDO E MORTAL ALBUM DESTA EXCELENTE BANDA AMERICANA!! ROCK PSICODÉLICO FEITO COM UMA HARMONIA IMPRESSIONANTE!! MAIS UM ALBUM RARÍSSIMO DOS CARAS!!

Excellent second album, that gets more psychedelic. Long weird explorations featuring fuzzed guitar and modular phasing, various keyboards and the highly individual vocals of Randy Monaco. A great album...

Mandrake Memorial's sound didn't change that much between their first and second album, but Medium is definitely a letdown after their fine self-titled debut. Although it retained the solemn vocals and classical-tinged electronic keyboards, as well as some jazz and Indian influences, there was a drift toward a harder rock sound and longer, more meandering songs. It's the compositions that drag the record down the most, as they aren't nearly as tuneful or concise as those on their first release. Too, while much of the material on the first album had a buoyant, soaring quality, there was a bit of a somber, bummed-out feeling on this one, as if the musicians were in regretful repose from exultant flight. The comparison might seem strange, but at times it sounded like the Youngbloods might have if they'd taken their jazzier and more experimental tendencies to more self-consciously progressive ends. There was less emphasis on harmony vocals this time around, too, and Randy Monaco's vocals had a sorrowful quality that sometimes recalled those of Lawrence Hammond from the barely-better-known-than-Mandrake Memorial band Mad River, though Monaco wasn't quite as doleful. All these criticisms make the album seem worse than it was: there's some interesting psychedelic interplay between guitar, keyboard, and vocals, and it's not unpleasant. But it doesn't go anywhere particularly exciting, either. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Mandrake Memorial - Mandrake Memorial (1968 US Psychedelic Prog Rock)

PRIMEIRO E RARO ALBUM DESTA EXCELENTE BANDA AMERICANA QUE FAZIA UM ROCK PSICODÉLICO DE PRIMEIRA LINHA COM UMA "COZINHA" MANDANDO UM A HARMONIA PERFEITA ENTRE GUITAR, TECLADOS E OCASINALMENTE USANDO ATÉ UMA SÍTARA PRA ARREMATAR!! UM ÓTIMO E RARO VENENO DIFÍCIL DE ENCONTRAR NO MERCADO!! EFEITO GARANTIDO!! NA SEQUENCIA SEGUE OS OUTROS DOIS ALBUNS DA BANDA!!

By far their best album, this suite-like collection features some haunting, first-rate songs, such as "Bird Journey," "Here I Am, " and "Dark Lady." With their harmonies and interplay between guitar, electric keyboards, and occasional sitar, they were very much a band of their age, but played with a drive and precision that anticipated progressive rock. Blessed End - Movin' On (1971 US Rock Psych)

BANDA OBSCURA ORIGINÁRIA DA PENNSYLVANIA QUE GRAVOU ESTE EXCELENTE ALBUM EM 1971 QUE TEM UMA SONORIDADE QUE, DEVIDO AO ÓRGAN PODEROSO E PELOS VOCAIS, LEMBRA MUITO A BANDA THE DOORS!! ESTE DISCO HOJE É EXTREMAMENTE RARO E NA ÉPOCA DE SEU LANÇAMENTO FOI PRENSADA APENAS 100 CÓPIAS!! ATUALMENTE VIROU PEÇA DE COLECIONADOR!!

Ah, Philadelphia's Doors ... Well, here's the executive summary. Like The Doors? You'll like this LP. Hate Jim Morrison and company? Read no further.

Attending Ridley High School, in 1968 buddies Ken Carson and Jim Shugarts decided they wanted to form a band. Neither played an instrument so they invested in a bass and guitar, spending several months attaining minimal proficiency before approaching friends about starting a band. By 1969 they'd recruited guitarist Lenny Perchowsky, drummer Mike Petrylak and singer Doug Teti. The group quickly underwent a personnel shift with Perchowsky dropping out to attend medical school; keyboardist Steve Quinzi subsequently added to the roster. A steady stream of school dances, parties, and battle of the band appearances brought the band some local attention and convinced Quinzi and Shugarts to start writing original material.

Good luck struck the band in 1971 when Quinzi was asked to loan his keyboards to the Springfield-based New Sound Studios. Rather than pay cash for the equipment, the studio offered the band free recording time. Having written and rehearsed several original numbers, the quintet went into the studio in early 1971, where working with producer Carl Sandell, they churned out "Movin' On" in a single day. Recorded with minimal post-production support, several of the tracks were in fact live takes.

One of the interesting things about this LP is the impact it has on listeners. Among the few folks who've actually heard it, the album comes off as either a wonderful slice of Doors-styled rock, or utter and complete derivative crap. For some reason, moderation doesn't seem to exist with regard to this set. So where do we stand? Well, we'll cast our lot with the former group. While the Doors influence is unarguable, most of the ten originals (credited to Quinzi and Shugarts) are actually pretty good. While Teti occasionally overdoes the Jim Morrison vibe, overall he's a pretty impressive performer, kicking considerable energy into tracks such as the lead off rocker "Nighttime Rider", "Someplace To Hide" and the title track. At the other end of the spectrum, the set occasionally bogs down amidst the band's penchant for doom and gloom lyrics. Also missing are The Doors' ability to punctuate their proceedings with stunning slices of pop and rock. Finally, Quinzi and Shugarts are more than competent performers, but simply can't match Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger in terms of compositional skills. or instrumental prowess.

With earnings from earlier shows, the band reportedly pressed 1,000 copies of the LP. Roughly half were given to family and friends, making it a rather sought after collectable. The album's been bootlegged on at least one occasion. In 1998 the Gear Fab label reissued the set on CD (catalog number GF-112). In 2000 Akarma Records released a vinyl reissue (catalog number AK 118).

John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers - John Mayall Plays John Mayall (Klooks Kleek 1965)

ESTE CARA MERECE UM DESTAQUE ENTRE OS VENENOS!! E NADA MELHOR QUE HOMENAGEAR O MESTRE BLUESEIRO BRANCO COM SEU PRIMEIRÍSSIMO E RARO ÁLBUM ONDE ELE, ALÉM DOIS VOCAIS, TOCAVA TECLADO, GAITA E GUITARRA!! O INÍCIO DE TUDO!! IN THE BEGGINING!! ESTE ÁLBUM FOI GRAVADO AO VIVO EM 1965 NO CLUBE KLOOKS KLEEK EM LONDRES!! VENENASSO PURO!!

Sagram - Pop Explosion Sitar Style From Sagram (1972 UK Psychedelic Sitar Rock)

O ALBUM É BASICAMENTE SÍTARA, TABLA E GUITARRA MESCLANDO PSICODELIA COM MÚSICA ORIENTAL DA MAIS ALTA QUALIDADE!! VENENO CHAPANTE E ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO PRA QUEM GOSTA DE UMA BOA SÍTARA!! UM INCENSO, UM VINHO...!! PRA VIAJAR NO COSMOS NÃO PRECISA GASOLINA JÁ DIZIA NOSSO GRANDE NEI LISBOA!!

Clem Alford was a classically-trained sitar player who spent time in India to enhance his knowledge of Indian classical music prior to joining the interesting but short-lived Magic Carpet in the early seventies. Upon their demise he recorded two solo albums of sitar music which are not easy to track down. The first is now a collector's item, and has been reissued on CD with additional material. The second, which is even harder to find, was recorded exclusively for use in music libraries. Prior to this in 1972 he'd recorded an album under the name Sagram. ("Tapestry of Delights", by Vemon Joynson)

In 1970 he formed a group named Sargam with two other musicians - Jim Moyes (guitar) and Keshav Sathe (tabla) - and this innovative trio (see picture above) recorded an album inappropriately released as Pop Explosion Sitar Style! under the band name Sagram, misspelt by the Windmill recording company, which issued the recording without the band's consent or knowledge. This LP has since become highly collectable and is offered for sale here today.

FOOD BRAIN - Social Gathering (1970 Japan Heavy Psychedelic Rock)

UMA VIAGEM AO SOL NASCENTE!! MAIS UMA BANDA MALUCA DOS JAPA!! FOOD BRAIN FAZIA UM JAZZ FUSION HARD ROCK E TOQUES PSICODÉLICOS!! OORGAN HAMMOND TRABALHA ALUCINADAMENTE LEGAL!! HÁ UMA INESPERADA INSANIDADE EXTREMAMENTE ALUCINANTE MAIS PARA O FINAL DO ÁLBUM, BEM TÍPICA DOS MALUCOS JAPONESES!! REALMENTE ESTE ALBUM IMPRESSIONA E SUGIRO QUE ESCUTEM!! O DISCO É TODO INSTRUMENTAL MAS GARANTO QUE NINGUÉM VAI SENTIR FALTA DE UM VOCAL!! O INSTRUMENTAL É MUITO LOUCO!! É SOM PRA COLECIONADOR E MALUCO!!
Very Rare! And A Must Have! Foodbrain were part of the early Japanese psych scene. Two of its members, Shinki Chen and Hiro Yanagida were part of a circle that included Speed, Glue and Shinki, and Love Life Live + 1. Foodbrain's Social Gathering features Yanagida's swirling Hammond organ and Chen's monsterous blues guitar. Where there is smoke there is fire and these guys smoke! The album has a nice raw vibe that adds to the overall energy of the album. The "normal" songs are connected by brief interludes of experimental bits, harpsichord, and so forth. The longest song, "A Hole in a Sausage" is the most experimental and contains some mad saxophone amidst the obligatory free-form psychedelic freakout. It gets a might tedious unless you're as stoned as those guys were! The rest of the album, though, is good heavy blues/psych. If you like good heavy blues guitar and organ, or are a fan of heavy psychedelia, check out Foodbrain. also has members from:Apryl Fool,Golden Cups and Strawberry Path

The Common People - Of The People/By The People/For Thee People. (1968 USA Psych)

UM DE MEUS DISCOS PREDILETOS!! GRANDE ALBUM COM INSTRUMENTAL E MELODIAS PERFEITAS, AGRADÁVEIS, UM VOCAL SUAVE, BOM DE ESCUTAR!! DIFÍCIL FAZER COMPARAÇÃO, MAS PRA SE TER UMA IDÉIA DARIA PRA DIZER QUE LEMBRA GANDALF, GROWING CONCERN, MANDRAKE MEMORIAL, TEA COMPANY E FEVER TREE!! ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO PRA QUEM GOSTA DE PSICODELIA TRANQUILA!! MAIS UM EXCELENTE EVENENO QUE TE LEVA A UMA AUDIÇÃO EXTREMAMENTE PRAZEROSA!! UM BOM VINHO E ESTE DISCO...

This album is a nice blend of folk-pop and light psych which in places sounds not unlike the softer side of Love or The Lollipop Shoppe, but with more orchestration. All eleven songs are originals, most of which are written by group members Jerrald and Denny Robinett, who are assumedly brothers. The standout track is probably the Love-esque “Take from You” which, like the rest of the album, features fine guitar work and soothing breathless vocals. Although Vernon Joynson in his book Fuzz, Acid, and Flowers compares the album to that of labelmates Gandalf, the Common People sound is more guitar based and its accompanying orchestration more invasive. Not a great album, but pleasant listening nonetheless. Similar sounds: Growing Concern, Mandrake Memorial, Tea Company, and Fever Tree. CD reissue is from the excellent up-and-coming Ascension Record label in Australia and is mastered from the tapes with excellent sound quality.
