HILL BARBATA ETHRIDGE - L.A. Getaway (1972 US Rock West Coast Bluesy)

BOM E OBSCURO ALBUM QUE COMBINA O TALENTO DE JOEL SCOTT HILL, CHRIS ETHRIDGE E JOHN BARBATA!! O VOCAL DE HILL É MUITO BOM E O SOM QUE VAI ENTRE O WEST COAST, GOSPEL E BLUES!! É MUITO LEGAL E TRANQUILO!! A FAIXA "OLE MAN TROUBLE" MOSTRA TODO O TALENTO E A FORÇA DO VOCAL DE HILL!! A VERSÃO PARA "BRIG IT TO JEROME" TAMBÉM É DESTAQUE!! BOM, OBSCURO E RARO VENENO!!

AMG REVIEW: Probably the greatest and most obscure supergroup album, L.A. Getaway combines the talents of a core group of Joel Scott Hill (guitar/vocals), Chris Ethridge (bass/piano/vocals), and Johnny Barbata (drums). The fact that lead singer Hill remains a largely unknown and under-recognized talent as a singer is one of the reasons for this album's obscurity. Hill's blue-eyed soul vocals on such rockers as "It's Your Love" and Dr.John's brilliant, New Orleans-soaked "Craney Crow" clearly attest to his sheer genius.

Perhaps the album's crowing achievement is a version of Booker T. Jones' slow and smoky gospel/blues workout, "Ole Man Trouble," which is aided by the songwriters' Hammond organ performance and a sterling background vocal arrangement. For this reason alone, L.A. Getaway is worth acquiring, even as an expensive Japanese import. There are numerous guest appearances on the record, including keyboard performances by Dr. John and Leon Russell. In many ways, producer Paul Rothchild used is cache to bring in as much talent on one record as he possibly could, while still retaining the band's overall group identity. As well, in relation to this, Etheridge's performances are fabulous, particularly on his rare lead vocal on the title track.

Barbata also shines on all of the cuts, and his playing dwarfs some of his other, excellent work on records by CSN&Y and the Turtles. In the end, the album remains a vital document of the period (early 1970s), and is well-worth seeking out. — Matthew Greenwald

REPOST: Dr. Hooker - The Truth (1972 US Psych)

EXCELENTE VENENO ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO!! DISCO RARO E UMA JÓIA RARA DA PSICODELIA!! CANÇÕES BEM TRABALHADAS E UM DISCO AGRADAVEL PARA ESCUTAR VÁRIAS VEZES E AINDA QUERER MAIS!!

Recorded in 1972 in New Haven, Connecticut, this album was originally released as a private pressing through D.R. Hooker’s own On Records label. “Released” is perhaps too strong a term – Hooker had a small batch of the album minted to give away to his friends. Like many rare, oddball records, original copies of this LP have taken on astronomical pricetags in recent years. But unlike some rarities, whose main selling point could be summarized in a Supply Vs. Demand graph, this is actually a lost gem that deserves to be heard.

The album has vaguely religious overtones, but the main theme that runs through it is the wonder of nature, and mankind’s relationship with the earth. It opens with the sound of ocean waves crashing, and also uses thunder claps and squawking seagulls to bring a feeling of the great outdoors to the music. The album is “Dedicated To Mother” and it doesn’t take a fertile imagination to conceive that the mother Hooker was actually dedicating this work to was Mother Earth.

And what a creation it is: ‘Forge Your Own Chains’ is one of the most interesting songs ever written about the perils of drug abuse. ‘Hello’ sounds like a late-era Doors outtake. ‘The Sea’ uses a driving backbeat and plenty of effects to build a swirling, spooky classic. There are many great moments here, and they add up to an album that is totally of its era, yet perfectly timeless.

REPOST: McCHURCH SOUNDROOM - Delusion (1971 German Heavy Prog)

BANDA ALEMÃ COM MUSICOS DE PRIMEIRA LINHA!! UM GRANDE ALBUM E UMA RARIDADE QUE RECOMENDO A TODO OS HOMENS DE BOM GOSTO!! A COMPARAÇÃO COM BANDA GRAVY TRAIN PODE SER FEITA, PRINCIPALMENTE PELO USO DE FLAUTAS E PELA VARIAÇÃO DE ESTILOS!! VENENO FUSION!!
Starting deceptively in folk-rock realms, "Delusion" moves around a lot, never sitting comfortably within any genre, and is largely instrumental, bridging psychedelic, hard-rock and fusion, being variably comparable to Gomorrha, Thirsty Moon and other such bands. The closest album to compare is Gravy Train's superb debut, which similarly featured flute in a variety of rock and fusion styles.

Another of those obscure bands about which there is little information. 'Delusion' (1972) is one of the rarest albums on the legendary Pilz label, and, therefore, hunted by collectors all over the globe. It has the typical German heavy progressive underground sound, based on loud guitars, trembling organ and flute. The sleeve generously credited the following people: "the Hamburg police appears during the session by kindly arrangement of enthusiastic neighbours"! The album contained five tracks in all. 'Dream of a Drummer' is slightly marred by a long drum solo, otherwise there is much to enjoy here. 'What Are You Doin'' contained an anti-drug message:
'What Are You Doin'', 'Time is Flying', and 'Delusion' are the highlights of this recommended album, produced by Konrad Plank.
As with so many contemporaries, McChurch Soundroom recorded just one album and then disappeared into obscurity (after the folding of Pilz in 1973

After several vain attempts in many bands, the brothers Rolf and Klaus Fichter finally found in 1973 their own musical identity. At this time the band original name BRONTOSAURUS changes to YATHA SIDHRA, a musical name which is really suitable for the new musical orientation taken by the two musicians. Particularly attentive to ethnic and meditative influences in popular music, they began to work on a long & epic piece called "A Meditation Mass" (under the influence of the famous Achim Reichel, the virtual member of the band who produces the album in 1974).The first intention was to create a dreamy musical landscape where the Moog synth, the flute & traditional "percussive" instruments play an important part. Seen as a concept album, "A Meditation Mass" is almost exclusively instrumental. A long suite divided in two themes with two variations for each one. A beautiful and ecstatic musical journey. Their sound oscillates between "pastoral" folk music, spacey rock with the addition of discreet jazzy accents. After this impressive work, YATHA SIDHRA is dissolved. At the beginning of the eighties, the brothers Fichter formed a new band called DREAMWORLD. A more synth meditative pop orientated music but it's worth checking.
