Very little is known about Joe Prichard or his sidekicks, except that the band, which hailed from Missouri, drew its inspiration from influences far and wide, resulting in each of the 5 tracks being very different in character, ranging from the power chords and staccato guitar breaks of the Jimmy Page variety, to the throaty sax of 12-bar blues specialists Climax Blues Band as well as the guitars of ZZ Top. There’s even a 9-minute jam a la Jethro Tull or Traffic with flute and sax giving a decidedly jazzy feel to proceedings.

Jards Anet da Silva, o Jards Macalé, nasceu no bairro da Tijuca (RJ) em 1943, rodeado de música. Do morro da Formiga vinha o batuque e de dentro de casa os foxes, modinhas e valsas que a mãe e o pai tocavam. Aos 8 anos de idade foi morar em Ipanema, onde descobriu o futebol de praia e ganhou o apelido de Macalé, em homenagem ao pior jogador do time do Botafogo naquela época. Pouco depois começou a aprender o violão pegando carona nas aulas de sua vizinha, Marilena.

Em 1959, formou seu primeiro grupo, o Dois no Balanço, ao lado do amigo Chiquinho Araújo. Em 1963, já influenciado pelo violão de João Gilberto, Macalé começou a compor, e, dois anos depois, iniciou a carreira profissional, substituindo Roberto Nascimento no violão junto ao Grupo Opinião. Em 1966 já fazia a direção musical do Recital de Maria Bethânia, no Rio. Acompanhou de perto o movimento pop dos Beatles e Jimi Hendrix e o surgimento do Tropicalismo, do qual participava apenas de discussões domésticas.

Em 1969, Jards Macalé gravou o seu primeiro compacto (Só Morto), que trazia a canção Gotham City, com a qual participou do IV Festival Internacional da Canção. Em 1971, viajou para Londres a convite de Caetano Veloso e fez vários shows pela Europa até retornar ao Brasil no ano seguinte. Alguns de seus principais parceiros são Waly Salomão, Capinam e Torquato Neto. Entre os intérpretes de suas músicas estão Maria Bethânia, Clara Nunes, Gal Costa, Elizeth Cardoso, Nara Leão e O Rappa.

They were founded in 1968 and changed their style of music quite often. They began with playing blues-rock, then changed to playing hard rock and ended up by playing jazz-rock in the seventies, each style containing progressive elements. Their only LP "Kentalope Island" was released in 1974 (Menga 3302).

Associates of Think, whose Ricky Ramor and Frank Voigt were amongst the many that passed through their ranks, Join In recorded their album at the same studio, with Eroc as engineer.KENTALOPE ISLAND is a pleasant record, with some slight Think references, but much more fusion, mixing jazzy musics with soft rock and prog elements typical of the era, comparable to many others: Guru Guru circa GLOBETROTTER, Cry Freedom, or Dutch acts like Alquin or Solution. For those that like such things, it's a good example of the genre, and all the better on the CD which includes some much stronger (if of not brilliant recording quality) material, where they live up to the band name much more, with some tasty jamming instrumental work.

This is the collected works of East coast basement garage psych group Mouzakis : their full LP from 1971, a ralher expensive collector 's item, with their singles, including 4 unreleased tracks .from 1967, as well as some singles under lhe name Q( lheir previous band, The Fabulous Pharoahs, with 14 extra trac!es in addition.

The band started with R&B rock standards, adapted on its wtry bits Q( rock 'n roll, early rock, and stayed moslly rather on the edge with a more garage rock sound They learned songs like from Animais, and did a cover .from Blues Magoos. The co/lection Q( singles is like a quick browsing through some standard style influences of the time, while the vocal approach and directness keeps their approach, except for their latest tracks, often a bit raw and primitive, garage-like. * Groups of that time like The f~1lO, Animais and even the Rolling Stones very much liked to keep that rawness Q( garage alive in their more into the 70s directing rock expressions, also F abulous Pharoahs and Mouzakis fitted with that approach. Their LP however shows something extra. The tracks are a bit longer and especially the first two tracks show complex rhythm use in combination with their adapted R&B irifluence into rock territory. "Magic Tube " has a complex fast rhythm, (bass and drums) almost.fun~'Y in its bluesy rock way, while on top is slower bluesy singing, with rhythm guitar, creating a unique kind of complexity I have not heard elsewhere. "Rock Around the clock" with additional organ parts continues a bit in the same direction. Unfortunately not all tracks are recorded in very good conditions, making them sound more garage-like. Most other tracks sound more familiar than these openers, but they still sound more attractive and more convincing than the singles.

1. Arnold Layne (2:53)
This is the regular single version, in mono (it sounds exactly like the official "Early Singles" version). The stereo version can be found on "Relics". This track was recorded at Sound Techniques Studios, London, on 11-12 Jan 1967. The single was released on 11 Mar 1967.
Sound quality: Sup!

2. Candy And A Currant Bun (2:44)
("Candy And A Currant" on the tracklist) As above, this is the regular version, in mono, as it appears on the official "Pink Floyd Early Singles". This track was the B-side of the "Arnold Layne" single, and was recorded during the same sessions.

3. Flaming (2:46)
("Flamming" on the tracklist) This is the alternate mix, as it appeared on the 3rd U.S. single, released on 5 Aug 1967, on Capitol's Tower label. This single was released on U.S. because this track didn't appear on the U.S. release of "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn". The mix is not so different from the regular one, just a little bit rough, and with some background sounds mixed louder. It's mono. Quality, again, is the best you can find. There are no vinyl crackles, so I guess this must have been taken from the Westwood One CD sampler "A CD Full Of Secrets".

4. Scream Thy Last Scream (4:38)
This one is wonderful! The famous unreleased single appears here with the best sound quality ever. There's absolutely no tape hiss, no distortion, no background noise! Sound quality is better than on "Magnesium Proverbs", "Sights And Sounds Of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd", "Early Singles"... If you want the definitive STLS version, get this CD. It was recorded on 9 Aug 1967, and it was planned to be the third U.K. single (w/ "Vegetable Man" as the B-side), but it was cancelled, so the third single (the last with Barrett) was finally "Apples And Oranges"/"Paintbox", released on 18 Nov 1967.

5. Julia Dream (2:23)
Recorded on 25 June 1968 for BBC's "Top Gear", 201 Picadilly Studio 1 in London. Excellent quality, better than most of other "BBC sessions" RoIOs. The only RoIO I know with comparable sound quality is "Ultra Rare Trax Vol.1".

6. Point Me At The Sky (3:31)
The booklet says this was taken from the same "Top Gear" session, but this is exactly the same version as the mono version that appears on the official "Pink Floyd Early Singles". Perfect sound quality, although I prefer the "stereo" version on the Westwood One CD sampler "A CD Full Of Secrets".

7. Embryo (3:27)
Wrongly listed as from "Top Gear" 14 Jan 1970. It's in fact from the 2 Dec 1968 "Top Gear" session, Maida Vale Studio 4, London. Sound quality is OK, but not as good as for "Julia Dream".

8. Atom Heart Mother (24:46)
This is the performance for the "Peel Sunday Concert" broadcast, recorded on 16 July 1970, at the BBC Paris Theatre, London. The date on the booklet is wrong (16 Sept 1970). This is the whole song, 24 minutes long, with the orchestra. Sound is excellent, but in MONO! In all the X-references I know, this broadcast is in stereo! It's a pity they didn't find the stereo source for this CD.

9. Breathe (2:59)
The booklet says it's a demo version, dated 17 Feb 1970. It's WRONG. This is from one of the very first public performances of "The Dark Side Of The Moon". It was recorded in London, at the Rainbow Theatre, 17 Feb 1972. So the booklet at least had the right day and month! Excellent stereo (maybe soundboard). It sounds like a copy of version on the "Best Of Tour 1972" RoIO (Swinging Pig), with the very good NoNoise mastering.

10. On The Run (6:21)
Same as for "Breathe". Booklet is wrong about the date and the source. This is from 17 Feb 1972. This version of OtR is the "jam" version, very different from the version on the official DSotM (released more than one year later!).

11. Money (1:40)
This time, this is really a demo version. Roger Waters sings the lyrics, accompying himself on acoustic guitar. Very interesting, because it's very different from the final developpement of the song. There's no Gilmour, Wright or Mason here. It's obvious that this track was recorded months before the first public performances, since it's a very "minimal" version. I think the year could be 1971 (not 1972, as listed on the booklet). This is a mono recording.

12. Pigs On The Wing (3:34)
Pt.I-II This is the complete studio version of this song, as the Floyd recorded it, in 1977. Between the first and second part, there's an electric guitar solo by Snowy White (he was the second guitarist on the "In the Flesh" tour). Unfortunately, they decided to cut this song in two parts for the album "Animals", and the beautiful middle part with Snowy White disappeared! The full version can only be found on the very rare 8-track release of "Animals". So here it is, in stereo, with some tape hiss (but not too annoying).

13. Mother (6:45)
Taken from the film version of "The Wall". The song is very different from the album version. The sound is really superb, in stereo. I think they copied it directly from the LaserDisk.

14. Empty Spaces / What Shall We Do Now? (4:36)
Listed as "Outside The Wall" on the booklet! This follows "Mother" on the film. "What Shall We Do Now" wasn't on the album version, but was played during "The Wall" shows.

Black Spirit is an italian band formed in 1970. After a few successfully live performances the band moves to Germany in order to sign their first release on Brutkasten (1978). Lately, this ultra rare effort has been re-issued Ohrwaschl. The band essentialy played in Germany until 1978. Musically speaking their sound is rather different than the lyrical and luminous italian prog rock. It is bluesy-hard-rockin music with discreet proggy tendances and krauty-psych sounding. The album was housed in a gatefold cover and is now very hard to find and expensive, it was pressed in 1500 copies. A vinyl reissue came out on the English Kissing Spell label in 1994, with a single cover with different design. The only reissue still available today is on CD, by the German label Ohrwaschl.

"Formado em 1971 com o nome de ROYAL SERVANTS, Eulenspygel foi uma das bandas pioneiras a escrever suas canções e cantar no idioma alemão, com suas letras constantemente analisando e criticando os inúmeros aspectos negativos da nossa sociedade doente. Seu primeiro LP foi "Eulenspygel 2" que tá postado logo abaixo. Esse é segundo LP da banda e foi gravado no estúdio dos Beatles, Apple, em Londres. Em 1994, foi ilegalmente lançado em CD no rótulo Luxembourg Germanofon. A liberação legal do que é esse do selo GARDEN OF DELIGHTS apresenta um livreto e sete faixas bônus. As três primeiras foram transmitidos no canal de televisão alemão ARD (Südfunk Stuttgart) em 1972 e foram tomadas a partir da fita master (master tape). As últimos quatro faixas são demos e inéditas.
Formed in 1971 as the Royal Servants’ successor, Eulenspygel were one of the very first bands to write their songs in German language, with their lyrics constantly analyzing and criticizing the numerous fishy aspects of our ill society. It’s a bit confusing that their first LP was called "Eulenspygel 2" but this is because they counted the one released by the Royal Servants. Their second LP "Ausschuß" was recorded in the Beatles’ Apple Studio in London. In 1994, it was illegally released on CD on the Luxembourg Germanofon label but sloppily presented. The legal release on Garden of Delights features a coloured booklet of 32 pages and seven bonus tracks. The first three of them were broadcast on the German ARD TV channel (Südfunk Stuttgart) in 1972 and have been taken from the station’s master tape. The last four tracks are unreleased demos.

Here is an absolutely killer 70’s German underground recording you must hear…..wow how come this album is so darn hard to hunt down? Eulenspygel were a wild bunch of music freaks who recorded a fantastic couple of albums with their second in review here. Eulenspygel carried that certain underground German 70’s vibe with homemade organ grinds, heavy bass and guitar overlays with heavier vocals, but wow is this album superb. With careful mix of jazz, fusion, prog and rock this album were pretty cleverly arranged and mixed with great imagination, color and tempo shifts. All vocals are sung in German and are done so with great conviction and I understand they are singing about anti-war themes. Fans of Krautrock will need to have this album in their collection….

This is one of these mega-rare privately-pressed albums which originally only appeared in demo form with just a handful of copies being available in a home-made paste-on sleeve. The musical menu is guitar-dominated heavy progressive rock but with sufficient melody to make it worth a listen. It contains six cuts in all with Coloured Armageddon Leaving, the punchy Saga Of A Sad Jester and Leaving, which had some melodic guitar work, the pick of the bunch. Reissue of 1971 private release by this short lived UK band. Nothing more is known about the band itself. The album is filled with heavy guitar riffs, pounding drums and some psychedlic touches. In the vein of that typical 70s british rock sound of bands like Gravy Train, Clear Blue Sky and Raw Material.(from progarchives.com)

This is a pretty unknown and uncommon band, despite its close relation with FRUMPY, which is a prog rock dream ensemble. It fits quite well, on the other hand, the scene of (hard) rock – having, in this case, the German authentic spark with several general and minimal influences – a musical scene which is rarely recognized or valued outside the obscure margins of its period. 8 DAYS IN APRIL's music is perfect for the taste in interesting or laid-back rock, since the album is also a mix of artistic and energized play, plus it’s close to a collection meritous item, up in progressive rock's classic, hard or eclectic mentions. The project was at first solo music practiced by Jean Jacques Kravetz, long-time keyboardist and rock in FRUMPY. Eventually though, 8 DAYS IN APRIL became a band of four core members and two special guests. Udo Lindenberg was second in importance next to Kravetz, writing and singing the vocals, plus composing much of the music. Steffi Stephan, playing bass, and Thomas Kretzschmer, playing guitars (with, sometimes, an astonishing freshness), joined the musicianship. The piece "I'd Like To Be A Child Again", though presumptively the most shining piece in the album, is mainly arranged by vocalist Inga Rumpf, also notorious in some of FRUMPY's experiences. Originally called "Kravetz" (given the promoter), the band finally adopted the name 8 DAYS IN APRIL, and their 1972 album was tag-titled The Hamburg Scene. Both names can be considered suggestive, since the ensemble recorded in Hamburg, and the album was, most likely, an 8 days rock work. The Hamburg Scene smashes a lot of hard classic rock mints, but also has a prog rock definite taste. Close to being purely (and purifying) instrumental, much of the music's contrasts evolve from lyrical and euphonic passages to striking and overly produced climaxes. 8 DAYS IN APRIL clearly play a blending rock of artistic and popular forms, with smaller influences of fuzzy rhythms, jazzy branding or complex emotions and frets.The entire concept, project and music relief of 8 DAYS IN APRIL is definitely of a bit spontaneous kind, nevertheless its improvisation is worthwhile, since it's a good and recommend prog rock band, up the rarity shelve.

Good pop-psych stuff from Massachusetts, with an almost (but not quite) UK sound like July or Kaleidoscope (UK).Pretty sweet pop-psych originals, some covers and some garagey stuff. I think one of them went on to be in angel. unreleased originally, acid archives compares it to july and that isn't too far off, but you know AMERICAN. "Mary is alone" could've been the ending theme for an awesome drug scare film, "mary is alone and wants to live but all she sees is death/mary is alone and wants to live but all she sees is meth..."

OK, first the physical aspect, the packaging. A limited and numbered edition of 300. Pressed on white vinyl and housed in a thick card cover with b/w pasted on sleeve designs. It looks and 'feels' like a classic '70s great white wonder, both nostalgic and splendid! So what about the music? The fourteen tracks were recorded between 1967-69 '…at Fleetwood and some other forgotten studio in Malden…' (and that's not in Surrey!) and may or may not represent the entire output of the legendary US psychsters. Dry Ice's rep hangs on two genre defining moments in the form of 'Mary Is Alone' ('Mary is alone and wants to live but all she sees is death, Mary is alone and wants to live but all she sees is meth' - hence the LP title) and 'Mr Sawyer'. Both these are present and correct, in fact in 'Mary's' case it is over-present, there are three takes included. The third, which is the final track on side 2, seems to be a mix and match of the other two to demonstrate how they differ (i.e. one is the released version, the other a demo). Mr Sawyer, a great US styled popsiker has just the one appearance whilst other originals (all written by band member John Tata) 'Ocean' and 'Sunny Day' appear twice each (see if you can hear a difference). Both these numbers have a strong affinity to Mr Sawyer's lightweight psych rock approach and are highly enjoyable. Then there is the cover of Sonny Boy Williams II's 'Eyesight To The Blind', which is neither a straight copy or a dreary blues rock dirge. It's short and sweet but reinvents the song in suitably lysergic tones. 'Let's Go Down' is a quiet and introspective number that makes you want to "shhh" other people in the room. Other covers are less adventurous and will have as much (or more) appeal to garage heads as to anyone else. 'I Saw Her Standing There', 'Oh Darling', 'Lucy Mae' and 'Sweet Little Sue' are all nicely fluid renditions with acid blues guitar breaks but which don't outstay their welcome and which as complete numbers have a distinct late era garage feel. Probably these are a taste of what comprised their usual live set. Overall the sound quality is good and as a whole the package represents a genuine (most of these recordings have not been issued before) and (a warmly welcomed) old-world type of collector's piece. Well assembled twenty song compilation of the Seed's repertoire in their 1965-67 era.Believe they disbanded in 1970.This is one of those lesser known garage/psych bands that true fans of such can never truly completely let go of.Some of the cuts here I thoroughly enjoyed were the two versions of their sole hit "Pushin' Too Hard","Satisfy You","Pretty Girl",the heavy psych "Chocolate River","900 Million People Daily"(great fuzz guitar)and "Nobody Spoil My Fun". A should-have.

Christmas was formed in 1969 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, out of the ashes of the cult underground psychedelic band Reign Ghost. In July 1970, Christmas released an independent self-titled debut that brought some media attention to the band and a contract with the Daffodil Records label. In December 1970, less than six months after the release of the debut, Christmas released their second album entitled "Heritage". Christmas was comprised of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Bob Bryden, bass Tyler Raizenne, drummer Rich Richter, and Robert Bulger on guitars, all of whom were still in their teens. The album gathered good reviews and was well received by critics but it was not commercially viable because the long songs and the heavy rock progressive style. It became an instant favorite in the underground music scene.

Os Sand são uma das singularidades discográficas dos anos 70, com um álbum de originais gravado em 1974, que possivelmente teria caído na completa obscuridade não o fosse David Tibet (Current 93) ter desenterrado da colecção privada de Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound). Originalmente apelidados de Part of Time, os Sand provêm da pequena cidade de Bodenwerder, no noroeste da Alemanha, e em 1970 eram compostos por Hannes Vester, pelos irmãos Papenberg, e por um par de outros músicos cuja identidade permanece desconhecida. Passado pouco tempo mudam-se para Colónia, onde encetam contactos com alguns membros dos Can e conhecem Klaus Schulze, que viria a ser determinante na sua breve carreira. 1972 constitui o ano das grandes mudanças. Vester viaja para Berlim com o objectivo de estudar psicologia, Ludwig e Ulrich Papenberg seguem as suas passadas, e é assim, na forma de um trio, que nascem oficialmente os Sand. Na capital alemã são expostos à cena musical experimental florescente bem como aos ideais políticos revolucionários em voga. Klaus Schulze, que por essa altura desenvolvia uma técnica de gravação inovadora, o Artificial Head Stereo Sound, em parceria com o engenheiro Manfred Schunke, e que mimetizava os efeitos surround dos sistemas de cinema caseiro actualmente omnipresentes, convida os Sand a gravarem um disco para “publicitar” este mecanismo.

O álbum “Golem” acaba por sair em 1974 pela editora Delta-Acustic, como parte das séries Artificial Head. As sonoridades revolvem em torno de paisagens abstractas, onde se inclui o tema de abertura “Helicopter”, e de canções de carisma surreal, das quais sublinhamos “May Rain”, posteriormente alvo de uma versão por parte dos Current 93. Após a separação definitiva em 1975, Hannes Vester prossegue a sua carreira musical gravando “Born to Dawn” com o projecto a solo Joahnnes Vester and His Vester Bester Tester Electric Folk Orchestra, Apesar de contar mais uma vez com o auxílio de Schulze, e do seu Artficial Head, as gravações não chegaram a ser editadas na altura. Teríamos que esperar 20 anos até que “Born to Dawn” visse nascer a luz do dia.

Esta oportunidade surgiu 1996 com uma reedição luxuosa pela World Serpent, que continha o primeiro e único disco dos Sand, algumas versões e excertos não utilizados nesse registo, bem como as referidas gravações do projecto solitário de Vester. Um disco verdadeiramente prodigioso, se me é permitida a expressão, para escutar activamente, sem distracções.

Antes de Jimi Hendrix ir para Londres para se tornar uma estrela, ele tinha gravado algum material com journeyman cantor de soul Curtis Knight e assinou um contrato com o executivo Ed Chaplin. Quando Hendrix se tornou uma estrela internacional em 1967 foi lançado esse album que se não é um verdadeiro disco de Hendrix devido ao fato de que não são em todas as faixas que o cara trabalha na guitarra, ao menos trata-se de um bom registro da era Hendrix pré-estrelato.

Resumindo a história: durante 1964-66 Hendrix era um membro da banda de Curtis Knight. Ao mesmo tempo Knight era administrado por Ed Chaplin que posteriormente se interessou por Hendrix, assinando-lhe um contrato solo. Este contrato deu direitos a Chalpin a uma série de demonstrações e jam sessions de Knight e Hendrix. Quando Hendrix atingiu o estrelatro, Chaplin não perdeu tempo escavando essas fitas e ofereceu a Capitol Records e qualquer outro rótulo que estava disposto a pagar seu preço. O álbum não tem muita informação biográfica, mas a julgar pelo material e os desempenhos das oito faixas foram aparentemente retirados de uma série de sessões de 1965-1966.

Released in the wake of Hendrix's commercial breakthrough, Capitol marketing executives clearly knew what they were doing putting Hendrix image on the cover of 1967's "Get That Feeling". You have to wonder how many folks bought this album under the impression it was a true Hendix LP only to discover that they'd really bought a compilation of early Curtis Knight material with little or no Hendrix content. Like the old adage says, buyer beware ... In spite of the Hendrix cover photo this 1967 curiosity is really a Curtis Knight effort. Knight handles all of the vocals with Hendrix's participation limited to sideman though his playing is quite good on a couple of tracks. Produced by Chalpin, the album doesn't have much in the way of biographical information, but judging by the material, and performances the eight tracks were apparently drawn from a series of 1965-1966 Knight sessions. The sound quality isn't great (most of the collection has a distant and hollow sound), but it is better than lots of other stuff in Hendrix's extensive catalog. For his part Knight actually sounds pretty good working his way through a mix of R&B ('No Business'), soul ('Welcome Home') and rock ('Strange Things'). Giving credit where due, a couple of songs like 'How Would You Feel' and 'Hush Now' actually generate a bit of artistic heat with Hendrix clearly working to perfect some of his breakthrough moves. If the sound quality had been a little better, this would actually be one of Hendrix's better peripheral releases. Even with the limitations discussed, the set's worth hearing.

First album (1969) from this SF act who were a very popular act around the city's ballrooms in the late 60's.This album is a more bluesy affair than their second although still contains heavy psychedelic touches throughout. Fantastic Rick Griffin artwork adorns the sleeve.. Led by singer multi-instrumentalist Wayne Ceballos with drummer Larry Martin and bassist Ken Newell rounding out the trio the group's initial reputation stemmed from their jam-oriented concerts. As one would expect from the title the group's 1969's album found them working in a distinctively blues-vein. Reflecting the band's live act this Richard Gotthrer-produced debut features a series of seven extended jams (the shortest song clocking in at 4 minutes). Ceballos proved a decent singer injecting considerable energy into his performances and the band really soars in many occasions. Truly interesting.

Aum was a San Francisco-based blues-rock group that lasted from 1968 to 1970 and released two albums. San Francisco act who were a very popular around the city's ballrooms in the late 60's. This their second album is from 1969 and it's a really diverse affair with a mixture of hard rock and psychedelic numbers.
