Co-produced by Louie Austin and Deep Purple's Jon Lord, 1972's "Sammy" offered up a competent, if slightly worn set of mid-1970s hard rock. Sammy were a short lived supergroup featuring ex-members of Audience, Quatermass, The Herd, Silverhead, Episode Six and Ginhouse. Sporting a brass driven hard rock sound, the band released their sole album in 1972 to an apathetic record buying public. Though the band toured relentlessly for two years, their efforts were not met with success and the band folded by the end of 1974. In retrospect, this was a stellar effort despite the two pointless prog interludes that are featured here. At times the band sounded a bit like Audience and there were elements of Deep Purple scattered throughout. This isn't a surprise, considering the album was produced by Ian Gillan. In fact, drummer Mick Underwood would later join Gillan's solo project for a number of years. He would also form Strapps and a revamped Quatermass in the 90's.

"Durante meados dos anos sessenta, na Nova Zelândia, as principais bandas tinham exímios guitarristas. Human Instinct tinha Billy Ticket, o Underdogs e a Space Farm tinham Harvey Mann e a banda Brew tinha Doug Jerebine. Harvey Mann tinha aprendido muito de sua técnica e estilo de Doug Jerebine da banda Brew. Quando a banda Brew acabou, Doug Jerebine foi pra Inglaterra e começou a escrever e gravar com o nome de Jessie Harper. Quando a banda Human Instinct fez uma breve visita à Inglaterra, eles se encontraram com Jessie e ele deu a banda algumas de suas canções. Na verdade, sete das canções do primeiro album da Human Instict foram escritos por Jessie Harper. Que poder tinha o cara hein pessoal. Ainda na Inglaterra Jessie Harper gravou um álbum cheio de material original que foi finalmente lançado em 1992 pela Kissing Spell. O álbum foi chamado de Guitar Absolution In The Shadow Of The Midnight Sun". Harper depois disso saiu da cena musical para se juntar ao movimento Hare Krishna, mas não antes de deixar um legado musical muito legal e de excelente qualidade."

During the mid sixties in New Zealand, the leading bands all included strong lead guitarists. Human Instinct had Billy TK, Ticket had Eddie Hansen, the Underdogs had Harvey Mann and the Brew had Doug Jerebine. Harvey Mann had learned much of his technique and style from Doug Jerebine. The Underdogs and Human Instinct were good competition for each other, both fighting for the ultimate cult following. When the Brew folded, Doug went to England and began writing and recording under the name Jessie Harper. When the Human Instinct made a brief visit to England, they met up with Jessie and he provided them with a number of his songs. In fact seven of the songs on the Human Instinct's first two albums were written by Jessie Harper. While in England Jessie Harper recorded an album full of original material, and this music was finally released in 1992 by Kissing Spell. The album was called "Guitar Absolution In The Shadow Of The Midnight Sun". The cover image is "The Agony In The Garden, Studio Of El Greco, 16th Century". The first album by underground New Zealand band THE HUMAN INSTINCT included four numbers written by JESSE HARPER who released one solo album of his own. Rumour has it that JIMI HENDRIX on hearing the Jesse Harper album back at the start of the 70's offered Harper a place in his band with Hendrix offering to play bass so that Harper could take over the lead guitar role. How true this story might be is now a big unknown. Harper quit the music scene to join the Hare Krishna movement but not before leaving a musical legacy that New Zealand's Human Instinct turned into a piece of underground history.

Love Sculpture formed in Cardiff in 1966 out of the remnants of another local band called The Human Beans, and disbanded in 1970, although Edmunds went on to enjoy solo success in the 1970s. The band itself was essentially a showpiece for Edmunds' considerable technical ability on the guitar. Love Sculpture mostly performed blues standards, slightly revved-up, but still largely reverent to the originals, releasing their debut album, Blues Helping with such songs as "Summertime", "Wang Dang Doodle" etc. They are best known for their 1968 novelty hit in the UK Singles Chart, a high speed cover version of the classical piece "Sabre Dance", by Aram Khachaturian, released on the Parlophone label (R 5744). The recording was inspired by Keith Emerson's classical rearrangements.[3] "Sabre Dance" became a hit after garnering the enthusiastic attention of British DJ John Peel.[3]

This was followed by a second album Forms and Feelings, with songs including: "In The Land of the Few", "Farandole", "People People", "Seagull" and the equally fast cover of Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me". They recorded three times for BBC Radio 1's John Peel sessions in 1968 (twice) and 1969.[4] Love Sculpture split up after a U.S. tour, having recorded two albums. Edmunds shortly went on to further number one hit success with "I Hear You Knocking", and collaborated heavily with ex-Brinsley Schwarz bassist Nick Lowe, eventually forming the band Rockpile with him

This is a rare album indeed and much sought after, originally released on the Scepter label (SPS 574) in 1970 and recorded in Memphis at the legendary American Sound Studios. The 'Joseph' was in fact Joseph Long or Joseph Longeria, discovered by the album's producer and A & R man Steve Tyrell playing in Houston in a battle of the blues competition. This is the only known foray into recording that Longeria made and he was a superb guitar player to boot. Stoned Age Man contains some of weirdest lyrics ever written. Check out 'I Ain't Fattenin' No More Frogs for Snakes' and the eastern 'Cold Biscuits and Fish Heads.' This is an obscure classic that lovers of blues rock should not hesitate to have in their collection... the voice you may ask... well think Roky Erickson, Jim Dandy and Beefheart....you can't really go wrong can you???? The band laid down a batch of excellent psychedelic tracks loaded with heavy fuzz guitar and these recordings have remained hidden until now. Shag's use of the flute was similar to Jethro Tull whilst the heavy guitar work and powerful vocals recalls early Grand Funk.

This Milwaukee band is remembered for its 1967 psych 7" "Stop & listen". what is not known about them is their 1969 studio recordings in San Francisco. The band layed down some excellent psychedelic tracks at the time the Grateful Dead were finishing their "Workingman's dead".

These recordings have never been released before and their use of the flute was similar to Jethro Tull's popularisation of this instrument. Recorded in 1969 at the same studio the Grateful Dead were laying down their classic "Workingman's Dead" LP. This Wisconsin band had a minor hit with "Stop & Listen" in 1967. Great late 60's Psych with a tasteful assortment of flute, fuzz guitar, and organ!!

A magical discovery from the down-under '70s psychedelic scene, Phil Sawyer's 1971 album Childhood's End, originally released in Australia on the Sweet Peach label, remains pretty unknown to most collectors. This is a wonderful album that will please anyone into psychedelia, rock and folk. Totally electric, great production, great songwriting -- and the warm, uneducated voice of Phil himself gives a slightly looser feel to it at times. The album contains some fantastic mid-tempo psychedelic folk-rock ballads, and the title track is an incredible slice of pure psychedelia, with lots of tasty psychedelic sound effects. The original is a very rare and collectable item (Hans Pokora gives it a 5-disc rating). This first-ever reissue is licensed from the original label and the sound is taken from the master tapes. "The music was free-form, original, and unrehearsable, since it was all spontaneous. I remarked to Phil that it was the steady thrum one experienced when you went to a Love-In. All these small groups of musicians playing guitars, tambourines, flutes, auto-harps, bongos, anything that made sound, all simultaneously, created a type of orderly orchestral sound. The combined beats were primitive, primal, the beat of the earth..."

The Beat Of The Earth: "Phil Pearlman, whose Relatively Clean Rivers album has received universal acclaim, assembled Beat Of The Earth in 1967 with this, their first, eponymous album, appearing on the Radish label (AS0001) in the same year. BOTE is often compared with their illustrious East coast counterparts, The Velvet Underground, an apt comparison given the Velvet's penchant for long, unstructured jams using a myriad assortment of acoustic and electronic instruments. This is the earliest incarnation of the band, and the one that is most familiar to collectors fortunate enough to own a copy of this incredibly rare album. 

The album consists of a single track per side, and this, the band's recording debut, is considered an unusual and singular item of significance from the California '60s alternative rock scene. Although guitarist Pearlman managed to keep Beat Of The Earth together for much of the remainder of the '60s, it is fair to say that no more "proper" recordings were made, although Pearlman continued to add to his personal collection of studio recordings, drafting in new musicians for impromptu after-hours recording sessions arranged at short notice. Another fascinating psych album from a true musical innovator.

I was introduced to this record after getting into one of Phil Pearlman's other bands, Beat of the Earth, and the great record label, Radioactive Records. Absolutely brilliant west coast rock, with a slick mid 70's Neil Young like production. This should be a great album for everyone to dig this summer. Love! First ever reissue. Former "Beat Of The Earth" leader Phil Pearlman assembled Relatively Clean Rivers in the early '70s and eventually recorded this excellent rural rock album in 1975.

Although it should be easy to pigeonhole the sound of Relatively Clean Rivers, it is actually anything but. At times sounding like The Grateful Dead in all their American Beauty pomp, or CSNY circa Déjà Vu, this tight, richly talented ensemble produces an album of almost majestic quality. The sound is superb, and clearly no time or expense were spared to produce an album which is probably the most flawless snapshot of Californian '70s under ground music that you will ever here.

Originally there were 2 pressings of this unique album, each of only 500 copies each, and this is the first time that this, or any of Pearlman's other recordings has been reissued. An album highly recommended to anyone even remotely interested in '70s West Coast music or simply top-notch music in general.

Fahey launched the careers of other notable artists on Takoma, including Leo Kottke, George Winston, Robbie Basho, Bola Sete and others. Peter Lang toured, recorded and performed for nearly ten years, developing a reputation as one of the nations top acoustic players. In the 70's he was in good company, having recorded or performed with Ry Cooder, John Fahey, Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, John Hartford, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Leo Kottke, Freddie King, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Hammond, Keith Jarrett, Phoebe Snow, Maria Muldaur, The Yellowjackets, Robben Ford, and many others. BeginningsMuch of McKenna Mendelson Mainline (MMM; see disambiguation at MMM)'s uniqueness stemmed from the originality of their approach to the blues genre. In the summer of 1968, Toronto, Canada blues guitarist Mike McKenna (born April 15, 1946 in Toronto), formerly of Luke & The Apostles, placed an ad in The Toronto Star in May 1968 seeking musicians for a new project. In replying to the ad, acoustic blues artist Joe Mendelson (born July 30, 1944 in Toronto) suggested to McKenna that the idea of searching for blues musicians through the want ad milieu was an exercise in naïveté. Nevertheless, the two worked well creatively and the basis of McKenna Mendelson Mainline's dynasty was formed.

Original band members
Former The Paupers bassist Denny Gerrard (born February 27, 1948 in Scarborough, Ontario) was invited to join, and The Spassicks' Tony Nolasco (born July 9, 1950 in Sudbury, Ontario) completed the quartet on drums. The band debuted at the Night Owl club in Toronto's Yorkville Village from August 5–10 and the following month recorded demos which later became the basis of a bootleg album, McKenna Mendelson Blues. Gerrard left the band in early October (immediately after a show at Massey Hall supporting The Fugs) because of artistic differences and was replaced by Mike Harrison (born November 1, 1948 in Brampton, Ontario), bassist from popular Canadian R&B band Grant Smith & The Power. What came to be known as "the original line up" was now in place. In November 1968, MMM opened for The Jeff Beck Group at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, USA, and garnered several standing ovations. The die was cast.

Early success in the UKIn December 1968, MMM reversed the trend of English bands coming to North America, and proceeded to England to gig and hopefully to pursue a major record deal. The band hit the stage almost immediately, their first show being at the Utrecht Pop Festival on December 27/28, 1968, filling a prime timeslot just vacated by Jimi Hendrix and his duo (Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell). MMM started soon thereafter gigging on an English club circuit which included such notables as The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Family (band), The Keef Hartley Band, Gun, and the newly-formed Led Zeppelin. After several false starts, they signed with Liberty/United Artists in the spring of 1969, and in April recorded their best-selling album Stink.

Back to Canada
Homesickness, dissension in the ranks, and the vagaries of youth facilitated a return to Canada in June 1969. Shortly after the July release of Stink, Allied Records released the demos recorded in September 1968 as McKenna Mendelson Blues. MMM thus became Canada's first "major label" act to be the victim of a bootlegged album. However, while in Europe and England selections from the Stink album appeared on various blues samplers and compilations. Following the success of Stink, MMM / Mainline had three subsequent releases of note - "Our Home and Native Land", "The Mainline Bump and Grind Review - Live at the Victory" (a well known, somewhat risqué Toronto burlesque theatre), and "No Substitutes". Following the release of "No Substitutes", Mainline disbanded and McKenna and Mendelson never played together again.

Mainline Today
The Mainline reunion of the late 1990s gave rise to their best known "recent" gig at Toronto's El Mocambo Tavern, which closed its doors for the last time in November 2001. A reformed Mainline, without Mendelson, but with Mike McKenna (guitar, slide guitar, vocals), Tony Nolasco (drums, lead vocals), Mike Harrison (bass, vocals), Ted Purdy (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Bob Adams (harmonica) played to a sold-out crowd on the Elmo's. A CD, Last Show @the Elmo, was subsequently released, and is available from Bullseye Records.

Ton-Ton Macoute foi originalmente gravado em 1969-70 e é re-lançado em CD com duas faixas inéditas - "I Don't Want No Woman" e "My Love Will Never Die". N verdade o CD foi lançado originalmente como um disco solo de Duane Allman. Mas Duane, obviamente, preferiu concentrar sua energia no recém-formado Allman Brothers Band e o resto, como dizem, é história. Só por curiosidade: Ton-Ton Macoute no folclore haitiano significa uma figura mítica que assombra as crianças que não obedecem a seus pais. O título parece dar o tom do CD e enquadra-se bem para as letras das canções "Gilded Splinters" que é uma versão da musica de Dr. John, "Blind Bats & Swamp Rats" e "Voodoo In You". Além disso, enquanto Duane optou por não considerar este como um projeto solo , ele aparece em seis das 11 músicas tocando sua slide guitar e double guitar. Os vocais são tratados com competência por Johnny Jenkins, e ele e Duane estão unidos no disco por Butch Trucks na bateria, Paul Hornsby no piano, entre outros grandes nomes.

Johnny Jenkins legendary "swamp blues" style, combined with a back up band of some of the best musicians ever assembled - Duane Allman - guitar & vocals, Berry Oakley - bass, Jaimoe - timbales, Paul Hornsby - piano and rhythm guitar, Johnny Sandlin - drums. Duane's acoustic slide guitar on "Rolling Stone" and "Down Along the Cove" is out of this world! Anyone who enjoys Duane Allman's guitar work or just some riveting blues, you will no doubt enjoy "Ton-Ton Macoute"!

In February 1971, when the Underdogs, whom at that time consisted of Harvey Mann, Glen Absolum and Neil Edwards, released their "Wasting My Time" album, and it failed to sell in great numbers, Neil Edwards decided to leave the group and join Human Instinct. Harvey and Glen added a new bass guitarist, Billy Williams, and to beef up the sound, Bob Gillett was added on saxophone. Also required was a new name, so they became the Australasian Rock Squad. Bob Gillett had been playing with Breeze prior to joining. Billy Williams came from Classic Affair.

In September 1971, Bob Gillett decided to become a part-time member of the group, so they rechristened themselves Space Farm. Space Farm only recorded one album for Zodiac. It was self-titled and released in 1972. This album was re-issued on the Little Wing label in 1989 under the name "Going Back To Eternity". The album was largely ignored by the public, but Space Farm continued to pull crowds and they remained at the forefront of the underground movement until their demise in 1973. Towards the end of the band, there had been drastic changes within. Harvey began to forego drugs and alcohol and these changes were reflected in his song writing and performances. After the group ended, Harvey took a sabbatical and when he returned to the scene it was as a member of the Krishna faith. He later joined Living Force with Glen. Billy Williams joined Ticket and Blerta before heading to Australia and great success in a number of Australian groups. In 2000 Ascension Records released their original album on CD. Hallelujah were in fact an Anglo-German duo, split off from Doldinger's Motherhood. They absconded to England to make their album, and sought the aid of much travelled top session-musicians Rick Kemp and Pete Wood. Incidentally, Pete Wood had somewhat of a global career in subsequent years with Al Stewart ('Year Of The Cat'). And good, old Rick Kemp had heads turning, at least in the British Isles with his group, "Steeleye Span". But, strangely the album only gained release in Germany! Adventurous and creative, though quite wordy in the song department, Hallelujah's influences were wide: a touch of the Beatles' "A Day In A Life", a hint of Wonderland, and lots of Pink Floyd folky Roger Waters influence -- an accessible blend of progressive and psychedelic styles.

Progarchives: Early 70's krautrock band from Berlin, Hanuman was formed by Peter Barth (flute, sax, vocals), Jörg Hahnfeld (bass), Thomas Holm (drums) and Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig (organ, piano, vocals). In 1972 the band will change the name to Lied des Teufels. Rüdiger Uhlig will join the legendary heavy progressive rock band Murphy Blend. The band released an unique album in 1971, largely made of extravagant, colourful, tastefull hybrid rockin' compositions with discreet influences from Van Der Graaf Generator.
The Crack In The Cosmic Egg: Berlin band formed by Murphy Blend organist Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig in May 1971 at a festival in Munich, along with a trio of jazz and blues musicians. Hanuman took the Murphy Blend sound, sans the classical style, hinting at Out Of Focus, but more lyrical and offbeat. The odd German vocals can be off-putting to non-Germans! My Favourite Records: First period of this rare Kraut-rock group from Berlin was named Hanuman and between the members played Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig, keyboard player from next famous Kraut-rock group from Berlin, Murphy Blend. In 1972, when Uhlig was replaced with guitar player & singer Ralf Schultze, they renamed their name to Lied Des Teufels (Song For Devil), what was a name of one short track from Hanuman LP. Music of both groups is very good, with a nice flute & sax solos and with long instrumental places. In Hanuman they used most of Uhlig's keyboards, but Lied Des Teufel was guitar orientated. They sang in german language.

The sole album by the Moving Sidewalks is as fascinating as it is unremarkable. As the birthing ground for legendary blues-rock guitarist Billy Gibbons, one would expect at least a taste of what would later make ZZ Top one of the best touring and recording bands on the planet; sadly, the album offers little in the way of revelation in its 15 tracks.

Admittedly, at the time of ZZ Top's 1970 debut, Gibbons' transformation from a journeyman bandleader into a boogie-blues demigod was still not fully realized, but his chops were miles away from what is heard here. Part of that lies in the fact that ZZ Top was less about psychedelia than straight blues; whatever psychedelic touches made their way onto the studio albums were largely an accessory. (They would eventually fully integrate on 1979's Deguello.)
The Moving Sidewalks, on the other hand, were psychedelic rockers whose songs hinted at the blues without fully diving in. The songs show little of Gibbons' future promise, and in fact are so thoroughly mediocre (both in writing and playing) that it's amazing to think he was only a few years away from international success. "Pluto-Sept. 31st" shows a clear Hendrix influence (the two guitarists openly admired each other), and as a bonus, Akarma's reissue includes five bonus singles that are some of the strongest material on the album, especially "Need Me," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and the legendary single "99th Floor." ~ Jim Smith, All Music Guide
