DANCER were formed from remnants of Isle of Wight folk rockers SHIDE & ACORN and future famed film director the late Anthony Minghella. Minghella had previously appeared as keyboardist in a small jazz group known as EARTHLIGHT. The musicians were discovered by Wilf Pine, former manager of BLACK SABBATH and future reputed ranking member of the Gotti mafia syndicate in the United States. Pine secured the group studio time at Olympia in the Barnes suburb of London in 1972, where they recorded seven tracks over a month's period under the direction of GROUNDHOGS guitarist Tony McPhee. McPhee, despite having an arm in a cast offered the guitar solo to close the title track. DANCER dissolved soon afterwards and their recordings remained forgotten until copies emerged nearly thirty years later and were released by Kissing Spell. Minghella would go on to a lengthy and successful career as a film producer, while Athey and Cuffe would form the funk band BIG SWIFTY. DANCER merit a place in the ProgArchives.com for their brief but enjoyable contribution to progressive music at a transitional and largely forgotten period in the individual members' careers. - ProgArchives -

One of the better rhythm'n'blues groups from Eastern Netherlands.  Founded in 1967 in Zwolle by Leen Ripke (v, ex-Mozarts) and Rudy van Dijk (s, ex-Jazz Prophets, later in Erwin Somer Group, Flash & Dance Band and Farrago) and named after the American group the Fifth Dimension.  In the beginning, it consisted of the above plus Jaap de Gronde, Karel v.d. Velde, Dirk-Jan v.d. Boogaard (tr, soon replaced by Chiel Scholder) and Jaap van Eyck (b, ex-Moans, to Sound Magics).

By the time they began recording, the line-up had changed to: Leen, Rudy, Helmig v.d. Vegt (o, p, ex-Vara Dansorkest, to Cuby & Blizzards), Herman Deinum (b, ex-Special Set and Mozarts, also to Cuby), Cees de Best (g), Michel Sardoen (tr) and Hans Lafaille (dr, ex-Jailhouse Jazzband, to Cuby; in 1969 replaced by Herman van Boeijen, ex-George Cash, to Fullhouse).  In 1969, the group's breakup was announced in the title of their last LP; on this record, Jaap van Eyck can be heard once again.

REPOST: Blodwyn Pig - Ahead Rings Out (1969 UK Heavy Blues Prog)

ESTA BANDA ERA COMANDADA POR MICK ABRAHAMS, EX-GUITARRISTA DOS PRIMEIROS DISCOS DO JETHRO TULL, NA FASE MAIS BLUEZEIRA E MALUCA DO JETHRO!! QUEM CONHECE VENENOS LEMBRA DO PRIMEIRO DISCO DO JETRHO TULL "THIS WAS" QUE ERA BASICAMENTE BLUES, JAZZ E ROCK DE ALTA QUALIDADE! POIS É, MICK ABRAHAMS SEGUIU ESTA LINHA NO BLODWYN PIG!! VIOLINO SAX EM DOSES CERTAS FAZENDO DESTE DISCO UMA OBRA DO BLUES ROCK PROGRESSIVO!! AQUI TEM UMA EDIÇÃO COM EXTRAS E COM  TODAS CAPAS!! VENENO PURO E LETAL!! ATÉ O PORQUINHO DA CAPA SE ENVENENOU E ENLOUQUECEU!!

Album Review
None of Jethro Tull's progressive rock tendencies or classical influences followed Mick Abrahams into his creation of Blodwyn Pig, even with the inclusion Jack Lancaster's sax- and flute-playing prowess. Instead, Abrahams built up a sturdy British blues-rock sound and used Lancaster's horn work to add some fire to the band's jazzy repertoire. Ahead Rings Out is a stellar concoction of gritty yet flamboyant blues-rock tunes and open-ended jazz centered around Mick Abrahams' cool-handed guitar playing, but it's the nonstop infusion of the other styles that makes the album such a solid listen. After only one album with Jethro Tull, Abrahams left to form this band, and it's evident that he had a lot of pent-up energy inside him when he recorded each of the album's tracks. With a barrage of electrifying rhythms and fleeting saxophone and woodwind excursions, cuts like "Sing Me a Song That I Know," "Up and Coming," and "Backwash" whip up highly energetic sprees of rock and blues. Most of the tracks have a hearty shot of rock up the middle, but in cuts like "The Change Song" and "Backwash," the explosive riffs are accompanied by a big band style of enthusiasm, adding even more depth to the material. Andy Pyle's bass playing is definitely distinct throughout each track and is used for anything but a steady background, while labeling Ron Berg's drumming as freewheeling and intemperate would be an understatement. It's apparent that Blodwyn Pig's style is indeed distinct, releasing a liberated and devil-may-care intensity while still managing to stay on track, but the fact that each cut convokes a different type of instrumental spiritedness is where the album really gains its reputation. Wonderfully busy and even a tad motley in some places, Ahead Rings Out shows off the power and vitality that can be channeled by combining a number of classic styles without sounding pretentious or overly inflated. A year later, Blodwyn Pig recorded Getting to This before Abrahams left the band, and although it's a solid effort, it falls just a smidgen short of Ahead Rings Out's bluesy dynamism. [The 2006 edition features seven bonus tracks.]

Mick Abrahams: guitar, vocals, seven-string slide guitar

THE CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND - The Best Of (1967-68 US Psychedelic Garage Rock)

ESSE ALBUM TINHA DE ESTAR AQUI NO MEU BLOG, POIS É UM DOS PRIMEIROS CDs QUE ADQUIRI NA ÉPOCA DAS IMPORTAÇÕES DOIDAS E CARAS DOS ANOS 80!! TAMBÉM TEM OUTRO SIGNIFICADO HISTÓRICO QUE É NADA MAIS NADA MENOS DO QUE A PRIMEIRA COLETÂNEA OFICIAL DA BANDA E QUE JÁ ESTÁ FORA DE CATÁLOGO HÁ MUITOS ANOS!! E É UMA BELÍSSIMA COLETÂNEA ONDE CAPTA BEM A EXPERIÊNCIA DA BANDA NA VEIA PISCODÉLICA!! VENENO RECOMENDADO PELA HISTÓRIA DO ALBUM E PELO SOM QUE É MUITO BOM!!

THE FIRST OFFICIAL CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND ANTHOLOGY!! HAT HAD TO BE POSTED ON CD HERE AT MY BLOG, BECAUSE ONE OF THE FIRST CD I BOUGHT THAT!! HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE ALSO HAVE ANOTHER BECAUSE IT IS THE FIRST OFFICIAL COMPILATION OF THE BAND AND WHAT IS ALREADY OUT OF PRINT FOR MANY YEARS! BEAUTIFUL AND IS A GOOD COMPILATION WHICH RAISES THE EXPERIENCE OF THE BAND IN PSYCHEDELIC VEIN!!

Are You Gonna Be There (At The Love-In) / No Way Out. (Texto retirado do site Mofo)

Twogether - A Couple Of Times (1973 German Prog Rock Psych Jazzy)

MAIS UM DA SÉRIE GARDEN OF DELIGHTS!! A BANDA É UM DUO DE TECLADOS E BATERIA!! A SONORIDADE É DENSA, ATMOSFÉRICA, GROOVY-SPACEY, IMPROVISAÇÃO DE PIANOS JAZZY E ALGUMAS BALADAS PSYCH!! É UM MOSAICO DE ESTILOS E INFLUÊNCIAS MUSICAIS!! UMA VIAGEM IMAGINATIVA ATRAVÉS DE JAM SESSIONS COM LIVRES IMPROVISAÇÕES!! VENENO ALEMÃO RARO E RECOMENDADO!!

A Couple of Times is an exubberant-powerfully tripped out jazzy-electronic trip. With bands as Kollektiv, Kraan, Out of Focus, Xhol (...) Twogether represent the jazziest side of krautrock. Their sound is rather atypical with reminiscence of notorious epic symphonic keyboardists (I'm thinking notably to early Keith Emerson with The Nice). A couple of Times is a patchwork of musical styles and influences, an imaginative trip through coulourful, soulful and freely improvised jam sessions. This is mostly instrumental.

The album starts with a collection of groovy-spacey electronic pieces built on endless keys / grand piano improvs and jazzy drum sets, admitting discreet acid pop-ish vocals. The album contains some basic-moody psych pop ballads (I look around, Meet me Every Day ...) featuring warm organic chords. Bolero is an epic spaciousness, including dense buzzing keyboards and majestic-desperate-heroic melodies. Fusion closes the album with the cloudy-abstract electronic poetry called Fusion. Despite that it was recorded during the 70's it sounds more like mellow-psych combos of the 60's. A Couple of Times remains a deliciously psychedelic, jazzy, neo-classical orientated musical trip. A little classic and a must have for all prog-heads of the first era. [Review by philippe]

WANIYETULA - Iron City (1971-78 German Prog Symphonic Psych)

VENENO ALEMÃO QUE NA VARDADE É UMA COMPILAÇÃO DE MUSICAS GRAVADAS PELA BANDA ENTRE 1971 E 1978!! A SONORIDADE É UM ROCK PROGRESSIVO, SINFÔNICO, PSICODÉLICO E COM ALGUMAS EXPERIMENTAÇÕES!! MAIS UM ALBUM DA SÉRIE GARDEN OF DELIGHTS!! BOM E RECOMENDADO VENENO!!

This CD is a compilation of tracks from 1971 to 1978. The label has released all of the bands other LPs. Lindis Farne starts things off from 1971 and is a loose spaced out jam track that last nearly 9 minutes. The band is clearly experimenting here and it is pretty cool. The next 4 tracks were recorded in 1974 and the sound changes dramatically, so much so you would not even think it was the same band! It starts with Wish I Were Happy, which starts off happy enough with very nice fingerpicking guitar and keyboards before it kicks into a more progressive symphonic rock but is also quite experimental with lots of different parts over the 12½ minutes. You Really Got It Fixed starts with an eerie organ before the bass and drums kick in at a quick pace and the track gets rolling. It features some really excellent duelling organ and guitar. It strangely almost fades to nothing at 8 minutes and slowly comes back a bit like Pink Floyd in a way and leads right into the mellow starting Iron City that around 5 minutes really starts to grow and take off with some jazzy guitar and nice interaction between the keyboard and guitars. It takes a quite strange twist in the last few minutes with a spoken word section and totally different guitar section. Look at the People is the last track from 1974 and this is quite a different track about war and peace and features a nice solo guitar that leads the track after the vocal section. The last tracks are from 1978 and start with Alone. The sound of the band is quite different now and more slick (drum sound is terrible), and now the band has a new synthesizer that has a special sound. The rest is very piano driven. It almost reminds me of Kansas or Styx. Valley of Unrest ends the CD and it is a little spacey with some nice guitar. Cool band.

REPOST: Road - Road (1972 US Hard Rock Prog Psych)

O BAIXISTA DA BANDA DE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, NOEL REDDING, JUNTO COM O GUITARRISTA DA BANDA RARE EARTH, LESLIE SAMPSON FORMOU ESTA BANDA PODEROSA CHAMADA ROAD!! ERA UM POWER TRIO FURIOSO E COMPETENTE QUE FAZIA UM ROCK PROGRESSIVO, PSICODÉLICO E COM FORTES PITADAS DO HARD ROCK!! HÁ NITIDAMENTE UMA INFLUÊNCIA DE HENDRIX NESTE ALBUM ONDE TODO O ALBUM É MARAVILHOSO, MAS DESTACO A FAIXA 4 QUE É REALMENTE MUITO PODEROSA!! UM VENENASSO ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO!!

1972 album from heavy rock trio Road with Rod Richards (guitar), Noel Redding (bass) and Leslie Sampson (drums). After Noel left The Jimi Hendrix Experience he formed Fat Mattress, quit them and then formed Road. This is their only album. Like the J.H. Experience it's a three piece rock outfit with strong acid guitar licks flying around.... Long tracks and titles like "Mushroom Man" tell you what it's all about. This is actually a storming heavy psyche rock album! 180 gram pressing in a gatefold sleeve.

Road was sort of a B-list supergroup, pairing Noel Redding (Jimi Hendrix Experience) with guitarist Rod Richards (formerly of Rare Earth) and drummer Leslie Sampson. The group's self-titled album ends up being little more than warmed-up post-Hendrix hard rock, heavy on the wah pedal. Richards actually turns in some fine, if not particularly original, performances on guitar, and Redding proves he couldn't write good songs if his career depended on it (clearly "She's So Fine" and "Little Miss Strange" were his high points). In true '70s hard rock form, the album drags a bit on side two during the obligatory drum solo on "Friends" and especially during Redding's ham-fisted bass "solo" on the unnecessarily epic "Road." Almost redeemed by Richards' guitar work, check this out only if you have a serious jones for '70s hard rock and/or wah-wah excess.

2 I'm Going Down to the Country 2:39

Yggdrasil - Yggdrasil (1972 German Prog Rock)

ALTA RARIDADE!! HIGH RARITY!! MAIS UM RELANÇAMENTO DO SELO GARDEN OF DELIGHT!! BANDA ALEMÃ QUE FAZIA UM ROCK PROGRESSIVO COM UMA NATUREZA CALMA REGADAS A VIOLINO E FLAUTAL E LETRAS EM INGLÊS!! BANDA RARÍSSIMA E POUCO CONHECIDA E SEU UNICO ALBUM FOI GRAVADO EM 1972 COM A EDIÇÃO DE APENAS 10 CÓPIAS A PARTIR DAS MASTERS TAPES!! A BANDA NUNCA FIGUROU ENTRE O CÍRCULO DE COLECIONADORES E SÓ AGORA CHEGA EM CD GRAÇAS MAIS UMA VEZ A GARDEN OF DELIGHTS COM TODAS AS CAPAS E BOOKLETS!! AQUI TEMO AS CINCO FAIXAS ORIGINAIS DO LP MAIS OITO MUSICAS INSTRUMENTAIS GRAVADAS A PARTIR DE 1970, MAIS A TRILHA SONORA DE UMA SÉRIE DE TELEVISÃO CHAMDA "SOMMER IN SIZILIEN", BEM COMO CINCO FAIXAS DEMOS GRAVADAS EM ENSAIOS DA BANDA!! VENENO ALEMÃO RARÍSSIMO E RECOMENDADO!!

From Munich. With violin and flutes. Their only LP was recorded in the summer of 1972 but only 10 copies of the metal acetate were made. From a first-grade copy of the master tape. Yggdrasil from Munich named themselves after the world ash or yew tree of the Germanic tribes and played progressive rock of a calmer nature, with flute, violin, and English lyrics. They are hardly known, as their own LP, recorded in the Robert Meilhaus Studio, didn’t get beyond the so-called metal acetate, a pre-state which can be played. In summer 1972, only 10 copies were produced by Meilton; they have never appeared in collector circles. These records could probably be sold for a four-digit amount today. The CD contains the five LP tracks plus eight instrumentals from 1970, then soundtrack to the TV series “Sommer in Sizilien” [Summer in Sicily], as well as five demo tracks recorded in the rehearsal room. Fortunately, there was still a copy of the LP master tape.

BOBAK, JONS, MALONE - Motherlight (1970 UK Psych Prog) FLAC

ÓTIMO VENENO NO FORMATO FLAC PARA CURTIR COM QUALIDADE!!
TEM MUITA GENTE QUE CONHECE PELO NOME DO ALBUM E NÃO PELO NOME DA BANDA!! HÁ UMA NÍTIDA CONFUSÃO QUE ROLA PELA INTERNET NESSE SENTIDO!! MAS ACREDITEM!! MOTHERLIGHT É O NOME DO DISCO E NÃO DA BANDA!! A SONORIDADE É UM ALBUM TRIPPY CHEIO DE PSICODELIA COM TENDÊNCIAS PROGRESSIVAS, POR VEZES ACIDO E FOLK, COM UMA BOA HARMONIA, BONS SOLOS DE GUITARRAS FUZZY E UMA ATMOSFERA SINISTRA E PERTURBADORA!! VENENO RARO E BASTANTE RECOMENDADO!!

A studio creation given a green light by Morgan Blue Town label owner Monty Babson, the trio consisted of recording engineers Mike Bobak and Andy Johns (that actually being the correct spelling of his last name) teaming with Wilson Malone, lead figure of never-quite-stars Orange Bicycle. Without trying to draw an exact parallel, one can say this was the equivalent to something like Curt Boettcher's work with the Millennium or Sagittarius, though on a smaller scale and with slightly different goals. With Malone on guitar, keyboards, singing and most songwriting chores while Bobak and Johns handled rhythm and recording duties, the trio created an easygoing and often quite attractive collection of eight songs, generally pitched somewhere between acid folk bliss-out and the kind of heavy riffage starting to coalesce into heavy metal, with sometimes strident piano tying all the songs together. A song like "On a Meadow-Lea" shows the various sides well, as Malone's calm repetition of the chorus towards the end offers him a chance to turn in a nicely fried solo over the top. Motherlight isn't deathless, and a couple of songs probably could have been dropped (though the ridiculous pseudo-country "Burning the Weed" is a classic novelty goof), but it's still a nice peek into a time and place. Meanwhile, David Wells' 2001 liner notes provide all the information one could want, as well as a wisely observed knock on the industry surrounding reissues or bootlegs of obscure U.K. albums from that era -- a bit of biting the hand that feeds, perhaps, but one done with humor and wit. (Ned Raggett - AMG)

Official reissue of this highly sought after psychedelic progressive /folky UK album from 1970. Mixing equal quantities of spidery psychedelia and progressive instrumentalism, the otherworldly feelings grow with each listening, as the use of dissonance is highlighted. Plenty of fuzz guitar too!! (Freak Emporium)

---------------------------------------------------------
Fifteen tracks from 1967-1969 (some from the very end of that span were recorded when the group were known as "Leviathan"). "Children of Tomorrow" and its B-side are the only two of these items that saw official (and very limited) release; the rest are taken from demos and a 1968 session for John Peel on the BBC. While "Children of Tomorrow" is the unquestioned highlight, much of this is pretty fair pop-psych. It takes a more raucous guitar-based approach than many of their psych contemporaries, only faltering when the band occasionally opts for a hard blues/soul approach. If you like British cult bands of the time such as Tomorrow, or are in the market for psychedelia that dips the usual spacy lyrics and full harmonies in guitars that owe a lot to late-'60s Who and Yardbirds, you'll be satisfied with much of what's on tap here.
---------------------------------------------------------
Biography by Richie Unterberger

A band with a confusing name and a confusing history, the Mike Stuart Span did manage to record a classic British psychedelic single in 1967, "Children of Tomorrow." With its driving power chords, squealing guitar leads, and haunting harmonies, the song struck a classic midpoint between hard mod-pop and the early psychedelia of UK groups like the Pink Floyd and Tomorrow. The problem was that hardly anyone actually heard the record, as it was pressed in a run of 500 copies on a small independent label. The Brighton group had been around since the mid-'60s, and recorded a few other singles for Columbia and Fontana with a much more conventional pop approach. There was actually no one named Mike Stuart in the act, which began to rely much more upon self-penned psychedelic material in 1967. Most of this never got beyond the demo/Peel session stage, though. The band were pressured by management to make an out-and-out pop single in 1968 that flopped, helping to squelch any prospects of the musicians asserting themselves as a significant presence in the British psych/prog scene. In the late '60s, the Mike Stuart Span were actually featured in a BBC TV documentary entitled A Year in the Life (Big Deal Group), which charted the band's successes and (more commonly) failures over the course of a year. By the time it aired in September 1969, however, the group had changed their name to Leviathan, signed with Elektra, released a few singles, completed an unreleased album, and broken up. Nothing else they recorded matched the brilliance of "Children of Tomorrow," though most of their original material was infused with the same yearning for some sort of just-around-the-horizon utopia. But they left behind a number of demos that demonstrated a promising ability to wed hard psychedelic guitars with a fair knack for melody and harmony. Interest in the band increased in the 1980s when "Children of Tomorrow" was featured on a few psychedelic compilations. An entire album's worth of tracks, culled from singles, demos, and a BBC session, finally saw the light of day in the mid-'90s.
---------------------------------------------------------
Leviathan

Rechristened Leviathan, Elektra launched their recording career in April 1969, with the simultaneous issue of two singles. Three of the chosen tracks - "Remember The Times", "Second Production" and "Time" had been initially been conceived as Span recordings, and the newly composed "The War Machine" completed the quartet. Elektra's media campaign was titled 'The Four Faces of Leviathan'.[2] Despite the commercial failure of both singles, work continued on the band's album at Trident Studios. As a taster for the LP, a further single coupling "Flames" and "Just Forget Tomorrow" was recorded in the summer. By the time that it surfaced in October 1969, however, Leviathan had split up. Holzman stated dissatisfication with the album,[2] and Bennett, who had returned to the band part-time, felt that he could earn more as a building site labourer.

This highly talented, underrated band from Sacramento in California produced what is now one of the most sought-after psychedelic albums. Family - BBC Radio (1968-69 UK Prog Psych Bluesy)

VENENO BOM, RARO E RECOMENDADO!! A BANDA FAMILY TOCANDO NA BBC NA SUA MELHOR FASE!! NA BBC RADIO AS VERSÕES SÃO GRAVADAS NO ESTÚDIO MAS FICAM DIFERENTES DAS ORIGINAIS E AINDA COM UMA VANTAGEM EXTRA, POIS A IMPRESSÃO É DE QUE A BANDA ESTÁ TOCANDO AO VIVO!! NESSE ALBUM OS CARAS TOCAM PRATICAMENTE CANÇÕES DE SEUS TRÊS PRIMEIROS ALBUNS!! VALE A PENA DAR UM TÉKINHO NESSE VENENO!!

This is the first of two volumes containing Family's previously unreleased BBC Radio 1 sessions. Featured here are several versions of tracks never before available on CD. This includes the only official release of their interpretation of the old blues number, 'I Sing Um The Way I Feel'. Covering the period from late 1968 up to mid-1969 these recorded sessions are mastered from the original BBC transcription tapes and feature one of Britain's finest bands playing in the studio, but with an extra edge that is normally only captured at live performances. This album has been compiled with the full help of the band, and the 12 page booklet features several rare photographs from their own archive, plus extensive liner notes and band history.

These 16 tracks are almost wholly composed of BBC versions of songs from Family's first three albums, though one ("Holding the Compass") didn't turn up until their fourth LP; another ("No Mule's Fool") was a 1969 single; and another, "I Sing 'Um the Way I Feel," was a J.B. Lenoir blues tune the band never put on their official records. Some of this material has come out on bootlegs, but the sound on this is notably superior -- it's quite good for a BBC archive release from any era, in fact. And while the arrangements don't differ too drastically from the studio versions, these performances are excellent. There's a bit of a loose live feel, but they demonstrate that the band -- unlike some others of the early progressive rock era -- were capable of re-creating their intricate, disciplined rock-blues-jazz-folk-miscellany interplay in a live setting, without sacrificing any of their gritty energy. Some of these renditions predate the release of the studio versions, sometimes by quite a bit; in the case of "Holding the Compass," in fact, the lyrics would change by the time it made it onto the Anyway album. Some might lament the absence of some particular favorites from their early days; there's no "Hey Mr. Policeman," for example. But really there's nothing to complain about considering the strong selection of songs here, which include such highlights of their early repertoire as "See Through Windows," "Drowned in Wine," the distressingly haunting folk-rockish "The Weaver's Answer," and the wistful "Observations From a Hill." ~ Richie Unterberger

VELVETT FOGG - Velvett Fogg (1969 UK Prog Psych)

Once Among the Trees (5:39) abre a parte de baladas do disco, e versa sobre aventuras sexuais.

Within the Night (4:47") lembra bastante o famoso e consagrado The Doors em sua introdução e andamento de baixo e teclado.

"There is a lot of good music on this record remember Velvett Fogg. You will hear the name again", escreveu o DJ na época de lançamento do álbum. - Wagner Xavier -

The Electric Prunes - Mass In F Minor (1968 US Psychedelic Acid Rock)

ALBUM REVIEW :
For fans of the Electric Prunes, the 1968 Reprise album Mass in F Minor is a disaster, but for aficionados of failed and bizarre concept records of the late '60s, it's definitely worth investigating. The eight tracks on this religious-based rock opera (with lyrics sung in Latin!) were written, arranged, and conducted by classical composer David Axelrod and spurred on by then-Prunes manager Lenny Poncher and record producer Dave Hassinger. Evidently, all parties involved, including the band, agreed that this project would propel the Electric Prunes from minor-league garage rockers into a finely tuned psychedelic ensemble to be taken seriously as musicians and artists. Unfortunately, the Prunes were not prepared to tackle Axelrod's complex and involved arrangements without a major struggle. In order to keep the sessions from going into costly overtime, Hassinger brought in studio musicians to finish the project. The results were completely unlike the group's previous two releases, with the majority of the tracks being performed by ad hoc Prunes. Shortly after the album's release, the original lineup faded into obscurity, taking Mass in F Minor with them. However, an eerie version of "Kyrie Eleison" received fleeting attention when it was featured in the film Easy Rider.

The Album Mass in F Minor

Hassinger and their manager seem to have forced Axelrod’s Mass in F Minor upon them. The band were regarded as a recognised and marketable product name that was supposed to help sell the concept. Subsequent trouble with the recording of the Mass meant that the Collectors (another band under the guidance of Hassinger) had to be called in the help finish the record. A disastrous live performance by the Prunes of the Mass resulted in further misery and the group disbanded soon after. Greedily Hassinger released two more albums in their name after the group had packed it in. Release of an Oath (68) and Just good Old Rock and Roll (69) contained none of the original band members, the former being another Axelrod concept played by top session musicians, the latter being a completely different outfit altogether.

That is not to say however that the Mass in F Minor should not be considered a Prunes album. It is still listed in their discogography on their official web site. Release of an Oath and Just Good Old Rock and Roll are conspicuously absent. Lead singer James Lowe contributed to the vocals throughout. Drummer Quint and lead guitarist Mark Tulin performed on each of the six cuts, and the full band are certainly present on the opening cuts, “Kyrie Eleison”, “Gloria” and “Credo”. Ironically it is these three tracks which are the standouts of the album. “Kyrie Eleison” is the only track without a backing orchestra, and is the closest to the Prunes’ own sound. Its’ jerky stop start groove, and wailing guitar solo’s make for a stone-wall acid rock classic. The keen eared among you may also notice its inclusion in Easy Rider, when Fonda and Hopper are mooching around in a brothel.

“Gloria” has a great groove and even better wah-wah inflicted guitar solo, sounding akin to Big Brother and The Holding Company in one of their stranger moments. “Credo” starts out auspiciously enough with church organ and a sinister/comical sounding brass melody, before the band and the guitarist let rip on another acid soaked jam. These three pieces more than highlight the fact that when they got down to it, the band could play intelligent and exciting rock music.Given what happened to the Prunes after this record was made it is hard not to feel animosity towards their producer and management for sending a respectable psych band under. It just shows that the music industry can be a hostile place.Still the band have garnered a following from their inclusion on psychedelic compilations and are still touring today. And from what can be read on their website they seem to still have a soft spot for this LP. Axelrod’s concept was an odd one but it worked, and talk of resurrecting the Mass for a live performance by the band may be a distinct and ironic possibility.

ELES CHEGARAM A GRAVAR UM ALBUM COM ESSE NOME EM 1970 COM UMA SONORIDADE JAZZ ROCK PROGRESSIVO NO ESTILO BURNING RED IVANHOE E TRAFFIC!! ESSAS INFLUÊNCIAS FICARAM BEM CLARAS NO ALBUM!! ESSE ALBUM JÁ FOI POSTADO AQUI NO BLOG!! O PROBLEMA É QUE LOGO DEPOIS DISSO DESCOBRIRAM QUE NO CANADÁ HAVIA UMA BANDA COM O MESMO NOME, POR ISSO RESOLVERAM MUDAR PARA MIDNIGHT SUN!! SURPREENDENTEMENTE EM VEZ DE GRAVAR COM UM NOVO MATERIAL ELES RESOLVEM REFAZER O PRIMEIRO ALBUM GRAVADO AINDA COMO RAINBOW BAND COM UM NOVO VOCALISTA E UMA CAPA DIFERENTE, PORÉM, ESSA SEGUNDA VERSÃO É MENOS POTENTE MUSICALMENTE QUE O ORIGINAL!! DIGAMOS QUE ESSE ALBUM JÁ COM O NOME DE MIDNIGHT SUN É UMA REVISITAÇÃO QUASE QUE COMPLETA DO ALBUM DA RAINBOW BAND, PORÉM COM UM VOCAL MENOS POTENTE E COM A INSERÇÃO DE PIANO ELÉTRICO, O QUE TIRA UM POUCO DA POTÊNCIA SONORA ORIGINAL DAS CANÇÕES!! ENFIM...MIDNIGHT SUN APESAR DISSO AINDA É UM BOM DISCO E UMA BOA FUSÃO DE JAZZ, BLUES E ROCK SETENTISTA!!
Scented Gardens of the Mind:
Denmark's Rainbow Band was formed in late 1969 as a supergroup consisting of Peer Frost (ex-Young Flowers), Lars Bisgaard (ex-Maxwells), Carsten Smedegaard (ex-Beefeaters), Bent Hesselmann and the former jazz players Niels Brønsted and Bo Stief (they had backed American jazz musicians at Copenhagen's Café Montmartre). The idea was to play jazz-influenced progressive rock in the style ofBurnin' Red Ivanhoe and Traffic's second album. These influences were strongly evident on their 1970 album. It's a very good effort, still very indicative of the hippie era. The rhythm section still produced the powerful 60s beat, forcing Peer Frost to squeeze out some of his best guitar solos. Lars Bisgaard was replaced by Allan Mortensen (ex-Tears) at the end of 1970. A Canadian group was already using the name Rainbow Band, which forced the Danish group to change their name into Midnight Sun in July 1971. Surprisingly enough, they decided to remake their first album instead of moving on to new material. The second version of the album is less powerful and stylistically creeping towards Blood, Sweat & Tears, mostly due to the vocals and supplementary electric piano. Only the second version of "Living On The Hill" was on par with the previous recording. With another new vocalist, Frank Lauridsen, Midnight Sun made two more albums of jazzy progressive rock.
