It's All Meat came from Toronto, Ontario and released a superb, but little known album on the Columbia label in 1970. The band consisted of RICK ASTON (bass), JED MacKAY (organ, piano), RICK McKIM (drums), WAYNE ROWORTH (guitar) and NORM WHITE (guitar) MacKay and McKim both previously played together with Toronto's Underworld, whose lone single, "Go Away", released in 1968, is considered one of Canada's most sought after garage bands songs.
The music of Its All Meat at most times sounds like the Doors (Crying Into A Deep Lake, Self-Confessed Lover) while at other times the band is a dead ringer for the Rolling Stones (Make Some Use Of Your Friends). This reissue, the second CD release on the Hallucinations label, features the entire It's All Meat album along with six bonus unreleased tracks and demos recorded by the band between 1969-1971 . It also features the band's first non lp single, the garage punk rocker "Feel It" released in 1970.

This package of 15 songs is an excellent example of early 70's keyboard-dominated psychedelia, garage punk, and haunting keyboard sounds. The CD packaging reproduces the original album graphics but the only draw back to the set is that unfortunately it is missing an essay or some sort of biography on the band.
The sound has been digitally remastered and for the most part it appears to have been taken from a vinyl source as there is an occasional vinyl static in places. Overall the sound quality is fairly good. Considering the rarity of the original "It's All Meat" album this release is welcomed by any fan of the early 70's garage and psychedelic sounds. Reissue of rare 1970 UK heavy fuzzed blues rock album plus 4 rare bonus tracks!!
A blues-rock band whose album is now an ultra-rarity. There's also been a limited edition (300 copies) release of live material, Diamonds In The Dirt, by the band. Produced by Geoff Gill, the Red Dirt album mostly comprises heavy blues-rock tracks, which are unlikely to have much appeal beyond fans of this genre. The only variation to this format comes with the opening cut Memories, the melodic Song For Pauline, the country-influenced Death Of A Dream and the final cut I've Been Down So Long, but unless you're heavily into blues-rock don't spend a small fortune on this album.

BURNING PLAGUE - Live at Last (1999 Belgium Blues)

Initially, the group consisted of Michael Heslop, Alex Capelle, Roger Carlier and Willy Stassen. Also Johan Verminnen was part of the group for a short while. They specialized themselves in hard blues and boogie, as was recorded on their debut album "Burning Plague" of 1970. Thanks to "mythical songs" such as "A38", "Life is Nonsense" and "Night Travelin' Man" this album became a - for the genre - huge success (over 10,000 sold copies and a first place in the "PopHot"-hitparade of Télémoustique). Naturally, the group also did a large number of live gigs in Belgium, among which featured a place at Jazz Bilzen of 1970 (the lineup included Black Sabbath and The Kinks that year). After a tour of Zaïre together with Danny Lademacher's Kleptomania the group got disbanded. However, in 1992 the band started a second life. There was a reunion in the "Grain d'Orge" in Brussels with Paul Vandevelde (ex Dr. Downtrip) on the drums. He was replaced two years after by Marc Ysaye (a radio-dj and drummer of Machiavel, Purple Prose and others). The reason for this reunion was explained in the lyrics of the song "23 years ago" : "Yes about 23 year ago today, we gave up playing, we thought it would be for good. But here we are back and to stay, and nobody thought that we would. The good old guitar is still crying, and the amps are cranked up to ten. We're still night travelin' men, so the good old Plague is back together again."

In 1995 Alex Capelle left the band, but he was replaced by Alain Pire (Such a Noise, Huy, Abbey Road). There even was a second CD of Burning Plague, and they got to open the fast growing Boogie Town Festival of that year (with John Mayall as top-of-the-bill). That not everybody is so happy with old blues groups reemerging, was proven by Jacky Huys in his review for Knack : "Totally passé is Burning Plague with their reunion-yawn Two". Marc Ysaye played with Burning Plague until 1998, when the also reunited Machiavel got so busy again that he couldn't afford to play with another group. Mario Zola took his place. In 1999 the original Burning Plague-LP of 1970 was re-released on CD and there was a Live CD (Burning Plague Live At Last). Their motto "They still got the natural born boogie and they need you to make the next gig a Burning blues night" was also to be heard at the Peer Rhythm & Blues Festival.

The Story:
In the Spring of 1968 the Mary Butterworth band was formed. They enjoyed playing a variety of engagements around the Southern California area and in 1969, the recorded the one and only album entitled Mary Butterworth. This original, vinyl album was pre-sold to fans and friends only-- it was never available to the general public. Shortly thereafter, the group split up and never performed together again. Years passed and rumors spread that Mary Butterworth had made it big. However, that was not the case. What did happen was that one of those original vinyl albums made it into the hands of "bootleggers" in another country. They thought enough of the music to reissued the album, and they began a sales campaign of their own. It didn't stop there. The Butterworth album has been bootlegged at least three other times in two different countries. The bootlegging has created a Mary Butterworth following and pushed the price of the original vinyl album to over $1,000.00 per vinyl album. The Psychedelic Rock Music of the '60's is still regarded, even today, as some of the greatest live music ever created -- and Mary Butterworth will be a lasting part of that history. This CD also includes many photos of the group. The CD, like the original vinyl album, is bound to be a collector's item. Now you can find out why.

The Bintangs from Beverwijk were originally named Rocket Dynes and Black Phantoms. They didn't only become known for their rough, smoky Hoogoven-born sound, but also for the great number of changes in their line-up. In the 1960s, especially in the province of Noord-Holland, they had a firm following, which, in the cities of Beverwijk and Haarlem, manifested itself in posters plastered on many walls and even a gigantic gas tank with their name painted on it. Although only one original member remains in the band now (Frank Kraayeveld, b, v) and they have split up a few times along the way, the Bintangs (Indonesian for "stars") are one of the (if not the) longest-lasting bands in the Netherlands.

Key members throughout the years were - apart from Frank Kraayeveld - his younger brother Arti (g, v and principal songwriter) and Mick Jagger-soundalike Guus (or Gus) Pleines (v, h). After just two hits, Arti and Frank left The Bintangs in late 1970 and formed Kraayeveld (later renamed Circus Kraayeveld). In 1974, Gus Pleines joined Kraayeveld from the then-defunct Bintangs, but in 1975 they changed their name to Bintangs again. Arti had already left Kraayeveld in June 1973 (replaced by younger brother René Kraayeveld) and formed Carlsberg. Gus Pleines was the lead singer between 1968-1983 and 1989-2004. He died in 2007. The band officially split up in 1985 with Frank forming The Frank Kraayeveld Band. They regrouped in 1989 and continue to this day.

Although only one original member remains in the band now (Frank Kraayeveld, b, v) and they have split up a few times along the way, the Bintangs (Indonesian for "stars") are one of the (if not the) longest-lasting bands in the Netherlands.

Key members throughout the years were - apart from Frank Kraayeveld - his younger brother Arti (g, v and principal songwriter) and Mick Jagger-soundalike Guus (or Gus) Pleines (v, h). After just two hits, Arti and Frank left The Bintangs in late 1970 and formed Kraayeveld (later renamed Circus Kraayeveld). In 1974, Gus Pleines joined Kraayeveld from the then-defunct Bintangs, but in 1975 they changed their name to Bintangs again. Arti had already left Kraayeveld in June 1973 (replaced by younger brother René Kraayeveld) and formed Carlsberg. Gus Pleines was the lead singer between 1968-1983 and 1989-2004. He died in 2007. The band officially split up in 1985 with Frank forming The Frank Kraayeveld Band. They regrouped in 1989 and continue to this day.

Formed from members of The Ebb Tides and The Kidds (see separate entries), the Newport, Rhode Island-based Tangerine Zoo came together in late 1967. Sporting a line up of guitarists Robert Benevides and Wayne Gagnon, keyboard player Ronald Medeiros, drummer Donald Smith and bassist Tony Tavares (yep, same guy as was in the '70s soul outfit), the band attracted considerable attention on the local club circuit (Newport's Dorian's and Lucifers niteclubs), quickly scoring a contract with the Detroit-based Mainstream label. 

Making their debut with 1968's cleverly titled "Tangerine Zoo", musically the album was a mixed success. As the primary writers, Gagnon and Mederios turned in a marginally interesting blend of garage, pop ("Please Don't Set Me Free") and psychedelic influences ("Trip To the Zoo", "The Flight" and " Crystalescent Heaven"). The absence of a distinctive lead singer coupled with the lack of a killer song didn't help the proceedings. On the other hand, the performances were all enthusiastic (check out "Nature's Children"), and "Mommy and Daddy" was easily one of the earliest slices of progressive rock we've ever heard. As was standard marketing procedure, the LP was rounded out by a couple of popular covers, including a meltdown version of Them's "Gloria" (check out the stunning feedback laced guitar) and equally nifty take on The Miracles' "One More Heartache".

From Newport, Rhode Island. Although their first album contains some impressive swirling organ work and occasional fuzztone guitar, its material, which is largely written by the band, lacks originality. Their second effort, Outside Looking In is the better of the two. Tavares departed prior to its recording and the remaining quartet produced wilder and more imaginative music which translated to vinyl quite effectively. On this, Wake Up Sun, Can't You See, Confusion and a cover of The Moody Blues' Another Morning are all excellent. It's a pity that the group didn't recruit a new lead vocalist, however, as shortcomings in this department are occasionally obvious. Tangerine Zoo evolved out of The Ebb Tides, and Wayne Gagnon later played in an outfit called Wadsworth Mansion. Pebbles, Vol. 21 includes a version of one of their better tracks Nature's Children as by The Kidds, a previous incarnation of this outfit. This late 70's band from Hanover, Germany, featured two guitarists (one of whom doubled on synth), a drummer, a bassist and a lead singer who also played flute and Mellotron. Like art rockers JANE, their music bears a strong floydian streak; add to this some early GENESIS lyrical fantasy, aggressive electric guitar and flute play reminiscent of NEUSCHWANSTEIN's "Battlement" and you'll have an idea of what they sound like. Their sole release, "Zeitmaschine" (The Time Machine), contains two relatively short tracks with English lyrics and two extended instrumentals: overall, a mish-mash of styles that include hard rock, symphonic prog and ambient German musik - often within the same track. Interesting exchange between the 12-string acoustic and crying electric guitars, good compositions and decent vocals. The sound quality is rather poor but the album still offers a nice trip into the past. Could be of interest to fans of JANE, NOVALIS and early RAMSES, or if you fancy a rather synthetic version of CAMEL.

Very little is known about Joe Prichard or his sidekicks, except that the band, which hailed from Missouri, drew its inspiration from influences far and wide, resulting in each of the 5 tracks being very different in character, ranging from the power chords and staccato guitar breaks of the Jimmy Page variety, to the throaty sax of 12-bar blues specialists Climax Blues Band as well as the guitars of ZZ Top. There’s even a 9-minute jam a la Jethro Tull or Traffic with flute and sax giving a decidedly jazzy feel to proceedings.

Chicago-style blues practitioner Barry Goldberg (keyboards/vocals) first came to prominence after appearing with Bob Dylan (guitar/vocals) at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Shortly after that he teamed up with Steve Miller (guitar/vocals) to form the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band, releasing a pair of mostly ignored 7" singles. After Miller split to the Bay Area to form his own blues band, Goldberg and the remnants of the short-lived Goldberg-Miller union headed to Music City U.S.A. to cut Blowing My Mind (1966) . Joining Goldberg were several up-and-coming notables, including Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica), Harvey Mandel (guitar), Roy Ruby (bass), and Maurice McKinley (drums). This quintet drives through a blend of high-energy originals as well as an interesting combination of equally commanding cover tunes.

This 1972 album was previously only available as a hideously rare private pressing. Five tracks of hard and heavy rock, with some outstanding guitar and keyboard work make up the only album from this Scottish band. Akarma CD comes in elaborate fold out "crucifix" hard card sleeve.The Hammond Organ is the primary instrument on this LP. The influence of its sound fits principally well within each song. "Aunty Mary's Trashcan," easily the best track on the LP, is nearly 11 minutes long and it illustrates my point perfectly. "Plastic Man" was the only cut where the guitar cuts loose as a featured instrument. All of you six-string aficionados need not being distraught over this as the electric guitar is an essential part of the mix with this music, it just is not as out front as you may be accustomed to.

One of the biggest blues/rock acts on the planet between 1969 and 1974, Ten Years After could attribute their far reaching success to two things: Promoter Bill Graham and their appearance in the landmark music documentary Woodstock. Graham was among the earliest U.S. promoters to book the band, and he made them a staple act at both Fillmores East and West. TYA went from virtual obscurity to rock superstardom simply as a result of their compelling number "I'm Going Home," a 10-minute blues/rock jam from their 1968 album, Undead. This recording was made at Graham's larger Winterland venue in 1971, two years after the band had skyrocketed to fame with the Woodstock movie. (The person who cut Ten Years After's revolutionary split screen segment in the Woodstock movie, one might be interested to know, was a novitiate editor named Martin Scorcese). The show takes place near the end of the of the band's golden years, when TYA had become primarily a vehicle for Alvin Lee's blistering guitar work, its songs comprised of equal parts rock, blues and jazz.

Shortly after recording this show, the band would leave Decca Records, the label who had signed them in 1967, and move to Columbia's corporate home. Columbia would take the band in a more radio friendly/pop driven direction (hence, the hit single "I'd Love To Change The World"). Frustrated with the popular music trend, Alvin Lee left the band, which disbanded soon after the second Columbia release in 1974. This recording, which features several hot blues jams, a great version of the riff-rock anthem "Love Like A Man" and another dynamic rendition of "I'm Going Home," is a testament to the band's musical prime. Ric Lee shows how strong a jazz drummer he is when they break into some free-form, jazzy jams during several of the numbers here. The original lineup made one reunion LP and did one more tour in 1988/89 before disbanding again. In 2003, Ric Lee assembled the group again, although Alvin would not participate. He was replaced by guitarist Joe Gooch, and the band is still recording and touring today.
