The Aztecs were formed from the combination of the Vibratones, an instrumental band from Sydney, and vocalist Billy Thorpe. This band didn't remain together for very long, but the entrepreneurial Thorpe quickly formed a new band under the same name. The second incarnation of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs comprised some of the best session musicians of the time, and played mainly middle-of-the-road rock and ballads. After the break up of the second band, Thorpe spent some time mastering guitar, and thinking about the musical approach for his next band. In 1968, the Aztecs rose again, this time comprising well known musicians and with a blues/R&B sound. This band endured through numerous line-up changes until finally breaking up when Thorpe left to travel to the USA.

"Mother Sunday foi formada em 1969 sob o nome "The Juice". A bandas consistiu de um guitarrista com o nome de Gégé, um baterista cujo nome não me lembro e eu nos teclados e vocais. Nosso repertório consistia de hits atuais e versões cover e nós éramos uma banda muito movimentada nos fins de semana com três a cinco shows em locais diferentes por noite. Nós nunca tivemos um baixista fixo, sempre convidados, uma vez teve uma jovem de nome de Heidi. Em 1970, um novo baixista entrou como convidado, seu nome era Michel. Ele era um hippie muito louco com o cabelo muito longo e ele nos apresentou uma "substância" para abrir nossas mentes. O LSD mudou a nossa atitude em relação à música instantaneamente e a partir disso ficamos com a mente aberta para a música experimental e jams ao vivo."

"Mother Sunday was formed in ca. 1969 under the name “The Juice”. We consisted of a guitar player by the name of Gégé, a drummer whose name I cannot remember and myself on keyboards and vocals. Our repertoire consisted of current chart hits cover versions and we were a very busy band on the weekends with three to five halfhour gigs in different locations a night. We never had a permanent bass player, always guests, once even a young girl by the name of Heidi. By ca. 1970 a new bass player joined as a guest, his name was Michel. He was a real crazy hippie with extremely long hair and he introduced us to “substances” to open our minds. LSD changed our attitude to music instantly and from there we were open minded to experimental live jam music."

Limited 750 edition of split lp featuring 2 dug up mysteries. As for Crank's music, it's consistently heavy, tightly played energetic hard rock, packed with sharp riffs. Owing a debt to Led Zep no doubt, but with it's own brand of aggression it stands on it's own merit as the sound of a young and extremely talented band that could have gone on greater success. The final track regresses slightly to a blues-rock standard, but this is eminently forgivable, acknowledging the influences this music emerged from. This really deserves to be on here, so ENJOY! Crank's set of tracks are excellent, extremely heavy and intense for their time and recommended to fans of early heavy metal. Stand-out track is 'Don't Push Me Away'

The rare 1970 album from obscure UK rock band Someones Band. Acoustic guitars meet wild electric guitar solos with a vocalist reminiscent of Steamhammer's Kieran White. Bluesy with a spacey production this should appeal to fans of 60s UK blues and heavy 70s progressive UK rock. 

This group got together via word of mouth and an advert in Melody Maker. They made a demo for Decca, who then sanctioned this album, which is now a monster rarity. Given that it was recorded in the course of a single night, it's a surprisingly polished and varied collection of progessive blues and soul. Also the influence of jazz, funk and African music is evident. Acoustic guitars meet wild electric guitar solos with a bluesy vocalist.

Recorded by a bunch of hippie freaks this an excellent jammy west coast rock, with excellent guitar leads throughout, flute, like  GRATEFUL DEAD. IS SO LIKE THE BAND GRATEFUL DEAD THE FIRST TRACK IS A VERSION OF "DO NOT EASY ME" THAT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST RECORDED BY DEAD SINGLES IN 1966!

Another great german rarity from their super PYSCH era..... absolutely great..The legendary hearse album on CD with bonus track! "We make rock music with German lyrics." With these words the trio of FRANZ K.( Mick Hannas (guitar), Peter Josefus (bass, vocals) and Stefan Josefus (drums) ) brought it to the point and earned a loyal fan base in Germany. On the road since 1969 the power trio made evey concert into a happening. "We want to ensure that you listen to us, thinking about our lyrics and maybe do something." These were the Seventies! 

Following to the debut album "Senseman", "Rock in Deutsch" (Rock in German) was published in 1973 by Zebra. With the hearse, which adorns the front cover of the album, Franz K. was constantly on the road in the Germany. Similar to its British counterpart, the Edgar Broughton Band, social criticism was packed in German texts. The band shot agains militarism, consumer greed, injustice in the workplace and met precisely the taste of students and apprentices then. Today you have to smile quietly over the choice of words, then the band was so far forward and was one of the most popular live bands.

John Mayall & Paul Butterfield (EP 1967 US Blues)

NÃO PRECISA DE APRESENTAÇÕES APENAS DE UMA RECOMENDAÇÃO!! BLUES PURO FEITO POR UMA DUPLA ACIMA DE QUALQUER SUSPEITA!! DOIS GIGANTES DO BLUES!! VENENO BLUES ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO PRA QUEM GOSTA DO BOM E VELHO BLUES!!

A summit meeting of the leading U.S. and U.K. blues-rock bandleaders of their time resulted in this four-song, seven-inch EP, which, like most such projects, didn't add up to the sum of its parts. By either man's standards, it's routine, if unobjectionable. Mayall takes a much stronger role than Butterfield; "Riding on the L&N" is about the best cut on a disc that also has a version of Junior Wells' "Little By Little" and one Mayall original, "Eagle Eye." Personnel is not listed on this rarity; one could reasonably assume from the date of release that it features the Peter Green version of the Bluesbreakers, but rock reference books are in conflict as to whether Mick Fleetwood and/or Peter Green appear on the disc or not. 

I haven't seen this reissued anywhere, although I am probably wrong. But at the time (1967), it was only available in the UK, since there was a contractual problem with Butterfield's label (Elektra) and Mayall's (Decca UK). A four-track ep featuring a collaboration between John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers from England (with disputed reports of who played what during the sessions) and Paul Butterfield from Chicago (the town, not the band) - a sort of East Meets West.

The results were met with mixed results, due probably to inflated expectations these two were the be-all/end-all of white blues musicians which no amount of hype could justify, and the fact that the disc wasn't for export to the states. Instead, it was a good solid session with two giants of 60's blues and no pretense. Simple.

Apesar da excelente recepção por parte do público e da boa química surgida entre o vocalista e guitarrista, o ego imenso de Little Richard não permitiria que um guitarrista talentoso ofuscasse a sua presença no palco. Com a desculpa de que Hendrix havia perdido o ônibus da banda após um show em Nova York, Little Richard o demitiu, felizmente não antes que alguns dos shows houvessem sido devidamente registrados. Devido à excelente repercussão de suas performances com Little Richard Jimi consegue um contrato de dois anos com a gravadora Columbia e rapidamente deixa de ser figurante."


History
The files at Vee Jay hold that Richard had seven sessions at the company from June 1964 - c. 1965, remaking seventeen of his old hits (Tutti Frutti, Good Golly Miss Molly et al) and recording thirty brand new ones. Even though Richard had left the company and moved on for several years, many of the unreleased VeeJay tracks were then turning up on 'new' albums up till 1974. Playing guitar on all of the tracks on the album was Jimi Hendrix, then before he became known in his own right, but having had his career and died before this album was released. Despite this, and the album being released in the same period as the movie footage of Little Richard in Sweet Toronto, the album failed to chart.

Cream - The Alternative Album 1966-1967

It is unclear whether this is a bootleg or just an unofficial release of out-takes and rehearsals that are now out of copyright (in Europe at least). The record companies pressured shops and distributers so I assume the latter. Its not a critical buy, even for serious fans. For the diehards it's interesting. Two tracks are now officially available on "Those Were The Days". Sound quality is poor especially on White Room which sounds like a review dub rather than a copy of a master. I'm not going to review each track just make some comments.

Lawdy Mama is the superior previously unreleased version now available on "Those Were The Days" as is the Fallstaff Beer commercial. Rollin' and Tumblin' and Cat's Squirrel (minus harmonica and guitar overdub - raw and tasty!) are good enough to be considered alternate takes. The Coffee Song breaks down as Jack and Eric crack up over the ludicrous lyrics/melody. Sweet Wine, Toad, Wrapping Paper and I Feel Free are rehearsals. You Make Me Feel is Jack and Eric working up one of Jack's songs despite Ginger's disinterested drumming. These tracks come from the Fresh Cream to Gears sessions. Falstaff and White Room are from the July-August 1968 Wheels sessions. White Room is a complete version which had the lead guitar and lead vocals completely redubbed during later sessions. The guitar is non wah wah which thus represents a significantly different version. It can be considered version 1 which would be nice if it was a decently mastered release.

A história de Philippe Debarge e The Pretty Things, embora não seja amplamente conhecida, é uma das lendas mais interessantes nos anais do rock and roll. Philippe Debarge era um rico e excêntrico playboy francês que tinha dinheiro para comprar tudo, mas acima de tudo, ansiava em se tornar uma estrela do rock. Ele morava em um grande castelo em Saint-Tropez, França, com vista para o mar Mediterrâneo com a sua família que fez fortuna na indústria farmacêutica. A época é o início de 1969 e Philippe era um grande fã do The Pretty Things, que tinha acabado de lançar o LP SF ' Sorrow ", que é agora é considerado por muitos como um dos melhores álbuns da psicodelia sessentista do Reino Unido, mas na época, infelizmente, foi uma bomba comercial.

Debarge começou a buscar ativamente o Pretty Things na esperança de se associar com eles em um álbum de sua autoria onde ele iria cantar e levar adiante sua divulgação. Devido ao fracasso comercial de "S.F. Sorrow ", o Pretty Things precisava de dinheiro e com isso aceitou a proposta de Debarge. Não sabendo o que esperar desse projeto, mas em uma crise financeira, os dois principais membros da banda, Phil May e Wally Waller, viajaram para o Sul da França para se reunir com Debarge e ver de perto essa proposta incomum mas tentadora. Lá eles encontraram um Debarge inexperiente musicalmente, mas fervoroso e autêntico companheiro, superfã da banda e determinado a fazer da sua fantasia uma realidade. E o melhor de tudo. Ele tinha os recursos financeiros necessários para que isso realmente acontecesse. May e Waller ficaram com Debarge por cerca de 5 a 6 dias e o tempo necessário e único em suas vidas para comer alimentos exóticos, beber requintados vinhos franceses e dirigindo vários automóveis de luxo raros, incluindo um Rolls Royce 1908. Waller recorda que "a decisão mais difícil que eu tive que fazer enquanto eu estava lá era saber se utilizaria a piscina de água salgada ou a piscina de água doce."

A viagem a Saint-Tropez acabou cimentando uma amizade muito forte entre os Debarge e os dois membros do Pretty Things. Muitos planos foram feitos levar Debarge de volta a Londres, onde iria gravar seu primeiro álbum. A única condição importante para o acordo era que eles só trabalhassem com canções originais escritas pela própria banda. Os estúdios Nova foi escolhido, que, na época, foi um dos primeiros estúdios em Londres que tinha equipamento de gravação completa. Era o mais completo e bem equipado de todos. Debarge cuidava de tudo e não poupou gastos para equipar o projeto, para um tempo de estúdio longo e com o aluguel de instrumentos adicionais além dos da propriedade da banda.

Para um francês, Debarge falava Inglês excelente e, embora ele não tinha experiência prévia como vocalista, ele tinha um talento natural para cantar. A formação do Pretty Things que gravou o álbum era Phil May (vocal), Wally Waller (baixo, guitarra, teclados, percussão, backing vocals), Jon Povey (teclados, bateria, percussão, backing vocals), Victor Unit (guitarra e backing vocals) e Twink (bateria). O disco ficou excelente e inclui musicas em sua maioria nunca antes lançadas, mas com algumas interpretações originais de algumas músicas ( "Alexandre", "Eagle's Son" e "It'll Never Be Me") que também foram incluídas no disco Electric Banana.

O LP foi gravado em acetato, mas infelizmente nunca lançado oficialmente até 2009 quando então May e Waller se reuniram com a UT Records / Ugly Things e remasterizaram as gravações e, finalmente, editaram as faixas do CD como foi originalmente concebido para ser ouvido. Antes desta versão, tudo o que estava disponível dessas canções foi uma gravação de acetato muito pobre que pouco fazia justiça a esse grande trabalho.

Enter PHILIPPE DEBARGE: Frenchman, playboy, and Pretty Things superfan.

He commissions the band to write and produce an album for him. Debarge and the five Pretty Things duly enter Nova Studios, one of London’s first eight-track facilities. With access to this new technology they experiment with multi-tracking and an array of psychedelic effects. Debarge sings lead, and the Pretty Things play and sing everything else on a stunning set of 12 May/Waller originals in the classic late ‘60s Pretty Things style, many of them never recorded by the band before or since. Acoustic, fuzz and backwards guitars abound, along with Mellotron, harpsichord and the unmistakable heavenly three-part harmonies of Phil May, Wally Waller and Jon Povey.

The Pretty Things were on a run in 1969. They had released several singles that charted over the past five years in the United Kingdom and Australia, had four albums under their belt, and even had a secret pseudo band called Electric Banana that made stock music for B-rated horror movies. But even with their mild success in their homeland of England and around Europe, the band was somewhat in disarray from not hitting it huge like the bands they recorded beside at Abbey Road Studios like The Beatles and Pink Floyd. The lead guitarist and founder of the band Dick Taylor left the band early in the year to try his hand at producing, and this left Phil May and Wally Waller to apply their song writing skills in full force and then out of nowhere Philippe DeBarge asked they would do the music for his debut solo album.

DeBarge was the son of a very wealthy French family and dreamed of becoming a rock star. His money and charm won The Pretty Things over very quickly and they decided to record a new album. DeBarge’s limitless budget provided the best studio money could buy and his voice was ready as well. Unlike most rich people who insist on putting out their music without the hint that they actually can’t sing, DeBarge could rock with the best of his day. After using a few songs they had worked on during live shows and concerts, The Pretty Things came up with some of the best psychedelic music of their career.

DeBarge took the finished album back to France thinking his family connections would get it published right away. Instead, the album had to wait forty years to come to album form and ten years after the death of DeBarge. It is now finally getting its due among the re-issue catalog of UT Records including a new song done by the original members of The Pretty Things in 2008.

The Pretty Things went on to record one of rock music’s classic albums Parachutes in 1970 and now are quietly touring on occasion and still making albums. Philippe DeBarge recorded another album with The Pretty Things in 1974 and finally got his musical debut worldwide, but would never become the star he wanted to become. After forty years, the music is still as good as the first day it was recorded and now it can live and breathe as it was intended-as a true rock album.

Originally released in 1970. Late 60's psych/garage with a feel of blues, soul and early 70's rock. 

Kenny Wayne and The Kamotions were from Shreveport, Louisiana and both of these cuts were on their album 'In Motion' but these mono 45 sides ain't seen the light of day on any comp before . This is a shame because they're both excelent.  'The Day When The Sun Goes Down' is a moody ballad. Kenny sure is missing his girl. There's a constant hammond organ adding to the overall low key feel of the song. 'How Should I Feel' also starts off all moody, again with cool hammond but then really picks up pace and starts to groove in a late 60s style. There's a memorable wah wah guitar break. Kenny's gruff vocals make this one a winner all round.

"Bluesy melodic rock with organ, sax, fuzz. real amateur sound. A highlight is "U.S. Blues" with trippy dippy counterculture lyrics, basement vocals, and avant sax noise. " That I found this for download made me disgorgingly apoplectic. A few years ago, I found a fairly decent copy of an ESP sampler LP in what was otherwise a box of trash. ESP was a folk, psych, freaky jazz label that existed in the late sixties and early seventies. All of the original LP pressings are very pricey collector's items. Hell, even the reissues on CD and LP will set you back about $50.00 as those are now out of print as well. The song on the sampler, and the only song I heard from Octopus until I found this on Rhapsody, was "Harold Knows (Better Than You)".

My immediate, almost visionary thought, when hearing this song was - my god, Trey Anastasio (or his mom for that matter) must have had this record. Octopus as progenitor of Phish - who knew? But the rest of the album just confirms it. Perhaps I'm insane, but I'll bet all the metaphysics in my aura that one way or another every musical idea in this record has been expanded on by Phish.

Not that the ideas on this record are presented all that well. The "US Blues" on this record is an annoying bluesy number with a freaked-out trumpet - in no way connected the Grateful Dead's song. "The War" is a typical hippy anti-war rant. However, "Fruk Juice" is a very cool 16min jazzy psych jam that is the primary reason this record has its high regard.
