[Repost] ORANGE WEDGE - No One Left But Me (1974 US Hard Rock Prog Bluesy)

ESSE É O SEGUNDO DISCO DESSA EXCELENTE BANDA AMERICANA FORMADA EM 1968 E QUE LANÇOU APENAS DOIS DISCOS DE HARD ROCK PROGRESSIVO COM PITADAS BLUES MUITO LEGAL MESMO!! ESSE SEGUNDO ALBUM DE 1974 TEM UMA PROPOSTA BEM MAIS HARD QUE O PRIMEIRO DISCO QUE VEM LOGO ACIMA NA PRÓXIMA POSTAGEM!! Rare north-american band. Only 2 albuns with few copies maked. The first album, from 1972, came the 60's sonority to 70's, a little bit more agressive sound and refined instrumental work. The second album, from 1974, it's more hard-rocking oriented, good guitars riffs and dark moments. Highly recomended.

Orange Wedge was established around 1968 in Baltimore, Maryland. The group evolved from Greg & the Originals. Members were Greg Coulson (lead vocals), Fred Zang (rhythm guitar, vocals), and Don Cowger (bass). In 1968 they added Craig Krixer (lead guitar), Dave Burgess (keyboards) and Tom Rizzo (drums). Krixer came up with the name Orange Wedge. The rock band began playing many teen centers, and school dances. After a brief illness and hospital stay in early 1969 Coulson rejoined the band. They began playing on regular basis quickly becoming one of the top hard rock bands in Baltimore. Orange Wedge could be seen at all the local clubs in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia. Zang and Krixer left the group in 1969 and joined Black Foot Smoke. Zang played guitar and / or bass for a lot of other groups. He is still active in the music business. The group that created the records existed between 1971 and 1975.

When the group decided to do there own music, guitarist Joe Farace (ex-Fabulous Monarchs, Cabbage) brought his basic ideas to the group. Coulson was responsible for the lyrics. The entire band created the arrangements. The first record entitled "Wedge" was recorded and mixed in Baltimore at Flite Three Studios in 1972. Five hundred copies were made which were distributed a few local stores, and several labels for a possible deal. The remaining records were sold out at shows when the group performed.

In 1973 Burgess left the band becoming a member of Patch. Their second album was released in 1974 titled "No One Left But Me" and was recorded at Sheffield Studios with special guests Mark O'Connor, and Jay Graboski of Oho. This time a thousand copies were pressed and distributed in the same way. The group performed the songs live at their shows. They were also heard on the local rock radio station. The group was never offered a contract for either release.

In 1975 Joe Farace left the band. Coulson and Rizzo continued the group which finally called it a day in late 1978. Both Orange Wedge LPs have been reissued in the 00's in the States and also have been reissued as a 2 LP German import on "Little Wing".

BEAST - Beast (US 1970 Prog Psych Jazz Rock)

SEGUNDO ALBUM DA BANDA FORMADA EM DENVER, COLORADO, E BEM MAIS MADURO QUE O PRIMEIRO COM UM ESTILO PROGRESSIVO, PITADAS DO JAZZ E DO FOLK, MAS CHEIO DE SURPRESAS NA AUDIÇÃO ONDE OS CARAS PASSEIAM POR VÁRIOS ESTILOS MUSICAIS, TUDO COM FLAUTA E ORGAN HAMMOND BEM LEGAIS!! VENENO RARO E BOM!!

Beast cover a variety of styles!! One minute you get acoustic/dreamy folk/psych, the next it's heavy and electric, followed by jazz excursions (50's style, Dixie, & ragtime!) and country. This Beast is full of surprises. For example, the 2nd cut on side 1 titled "Communication" (my personal favourite) is a fairly lengthy full-blown psych/hard rocker, while taking a few jazz turns as well..employing flute and keyboards, which make for some very cool instrumental passages.

MAGI - Win Or Lose [1976 US Hard Rock]

BOA BANDA AMERICANA QUE ATRAÍA MULTIDÕES COM SEUS SHOWS AO VIVO!! POR VEZES COMPARADOS A LED ZEPPELIN, APESAR DE EU PARTICULARMENTE ACHAR UMA COMPARAÇÃO EXAGERADA, O SOM DOS CARAS ERA HARD CRU COM ALGUMAS PITADAS PSICODÉLICAS, ALTA ENERGIA E UM ÓTIMO TRABALHO DE GUITARRAS FUZZY!! VENENO BOM E RECOMENDADO!!

This north Indiana outfit ruled the roost in the 'Michiana' region in the mid-'70s, attracting huge crowds whenever they played live. Often compared with Led Zeppelin, this 5-piece outfit rocked the area with a tight and raw sound that combined in-your-face hard rock with undisguised psychedelic tendencies and lashings of fuzz. It must be said the boys didn't do themselves any favours by issuing their only known album with a cover reminiscent of a Journey photo shoot, but regardless of their dubious hair and sense of dress, Magi certainly deserved more than the obscurity into which they ultimately lapsed. Win Or Lose, recorded at Uncle Dirty's Sound Machine studios in Michigan in 1976, and which boasts a series of solid songs propelled by a tight rhythm section and some more-than respectable vocals, is always reviewed enthusiastically.

The album was recorded in 1975, and sounds somewhat typical of hard rock of it's vintage. One cut features good use of fuzz guitar, while the rest has good period flavor. But overall, this might not appeal to researchers seeking psychedelic rock. They were from northern Indiana.

Tracks 10 to 14 recorded live at Studenterforeningen, Copenhagen in 1972.

-----------------------------------------------------
The liner notes in the booklet are strangely enough only in Danish, as if there wouldn’t be any foreigners interested in this band. The only thing I can make of the notes is that they were noticeably influenced by Rory Gallager, Vanilla Fudge, Hendrix and Cream, and secondly by Zeppelin & Doors which from which I don’t find any influence. They covered a Cream song, “Mr.Fantasy”, and two Hendrix tracks, “Fire” and “Break Song”. This last track is really convincing and shows a direct Hendrix endowment, and great solo guitar. I also saw the name Peter Quaife, bass player from The Kinks, mentioned as producer for their only 1971 album.

More or less the only and sure deliberately arranged or prepaired song for the album is “Carlt”, one side of a very good single, which highlights with speeded up heavy percussion (congas, drums,..). I found out that after the single, most of the CD is this LP album, with an additional 5 live tracks. Without knowing that, the CD sounds more or less like one long concert. The group definitely stands in the walking shoes of that part of the psychrock scene which developed out of blues and boogie-woogie. As a progressive band for me they still stand in the shadow of their Swedish neighbours, but as a jamming band they have some convincing elements, although the music sometimes sound somewhat absorbed by the jamming nature, and the poor quality of the live recording is a confirmation to this feeling. We hear mostly fuckin’ rocking long jams and jammed songs, with dirty and fat guitars, which sound pretty smoked, -and who knows drugged and alcohol-boozed-. Like I was mentioning, at times this smoky and stoned atmosphere for the length of the CD works altough at times it is a bit saturating. The best sound for live recordings of this kind of music normally does not always matter too much, but in the end for me it did take its toll ; at the time when the last track, the rock’n roll “Long Tall Sally” comes in, I’m really drunk from the music and tired, and with a feeling as if I’m truly there at the concert I take a break to go for a pee.

Soren Hilligsoe - bass, vocals
Allan Vokstrup - drums
