THE BAND WAS ORIGINALLY CALLED RAINBOW BAND AND WAS CONSIDERED A SUPERGROUP FORMED BY PEER FROST, FORMER GUITARIST OF YOUNG FLOWERS; LARS BISGAARD, FORMER MAXWELL; CARSTEN SMEDEGAARD, FORMER BEEFEATHERS; AMONG OTHER RENOWNED MUSICIANS FROM DENMARK! THEY RECORDED AN ALBUM UNDER THIS NAME IN 1970 WITH A JAZZ-ROCK PROGRESSIVE SOUND SIMILAR TO BURNING RED IVANHOE AND TRAFFIC. THESE INFLUENCES WERE VERY CLEAR ON THE ALBUM! THIS ALBUM HAS ALREADY BEEN POSTED HERE ON THE BLOG! THE PROBLEM WAS THAT SHORTLY AFTER THAT, THEY DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS A BAND IN CANADA WITH THE SAME NAME, SO THEY DECIDED TO CHANGE THEIR NAME TO MIDNIGHT SUN! SURPRISINGLY, INSTEAD OF RECORDING NEW MATERIAL, THEY DECIDED TO RE-RECORD THE FIRST ALBUM MADE AS RAINBOW BAND WITH A NEW VOCALIST AND A DIFFERENT COVER. HOWEVER, THIS SECOND VERSION IS LESS POWERFUL MUSICALLY THAN THE ORIGINAL! LET’S SAY THAT THIS ALBUM, NOW UNDER THE NAME MIDNIGHT SUN, IS A REVISITATION OF THE RAINBOW BAND ALBUM, BUT WITH A LESS POWERFUL VOCAL AND THE ADDITION OF ELECTRIC PIANO, WHICH TAKES AWAY SOME OF THE ORIGINAL SONIC STRENGTH OF THE SONGS! ANYWAY... DESPITE THAT, MIDNIGHT SUN IS STILL A GOOD RECORD AND A GREAT FUSION OF JAZZ, BLUES, AND 70S ROCK!
