Embora não sejam muito conhecidos fora de seu país, Azna de L'Ader é uma das bandas de rock pioneiras da Nigéria. Eles tocam juntos em diferentes formações há mais de 40 anos, principalmente na região de Tahouar. A música de Azna é uma visão chocante do rock psicodélico dos anos 1970, incluindo solos de guitarra fortemente fuzzy e percussão estrondosa, que vive em uma esfera estilística semelhante à de Zamrock. A banda é liderada por Mona, um guitarrista afiado que tem sido seu único membro constante ao longo das décadas e foi apelidado de “Hendrix do Saara”. Apesar de ter grande destaque na área, eles nunca gravaram um álbum por falta de estúdios. A Sahel Sounds lançou agora Zabaya, o primeiro lançamento oficial de Azna de L'Ader. O disco de 8 músicas compila destaques das gravações da banda restauradas dos arquivos da Radio Niger (ORTN).

Falando sobre as influências ocidentais em sua música, Mona explica que tudo está ligado aos seus ancestrais nas notas do álbum: “Quando os europeus levaram os negros como escravos nos EUA, nossos ancestrais trouxeram sua cultura com eles. Eles misturaram sua música com instrumentos modernos, e criaram o blues, e isso inventou o rock ‘n’ roll, o rhythm and blues, o jazz e tudo mais. O blues vem daqui. Cantamos, choramos e entramos em transe. Fazemos Bori, fazemos Voodoo. Nossos ancestrais trouxeram isso para os EUA. Pouco a pouco, a música conquistou a todos.”

Agora com 72 anos, Mona atua como diretor musical da banda orientando um novo grupo de jovens músicos que compõem a nova Azna de L’Ader. Zabaya já está disponível em vinil e Bandcamp via Sahel Sounds. A edição em vinil vem com um livro de fotos e encarte.

Although they are not well known outside their country, Azna de L'Ader is one of Nigeria's pioneering rock bands. They have been playing together in different formations for over 40 years, mostly in the Tahouar region. Azna's music is a shocking take on 1970s psychedelic rock, including heavily fuzzy guitar solos and thunderous percussion, which lives in a similar stylistic realm to that of Zamrock. The band is led by Mona, a keen guitarist who has been its only constant member over the decades and has been dubbed the “Hendrix of the Sahara”. Despite having great prominence in the area, they never recorded an album for lack of studios. Sahel Sounds has now released Zabaya, the first official release of Azna de L'Ader. The 8-song disc compiles highlights of the band's recordings restored from the Radio Niger (ORTN) archives.

Talking about the Western influences in her music, Mona explains that it's all tied to her ancestors in the album's liner notes: “When Europeans took black people as slaves to the US, our ancestors brought their culture with them. They mixed their music with modern instruments, and they created the blues, and that invented rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, jazz and everything in between. The blues come from here. We sing, we cry and we go into a trance. We do Bori, we do Voodoo. Our ancestors brought this to the US. Little by little, the music conquered everyone.”

Now 72, Mona serves as the band's music director guiding a new group of young musicians who make up the new Azna de L'Ader. Zabaya is now available on vinyl and Bandcamp via Sahel Sounds. The vinyl edition comes with a photo book and booklet.
